Re: 2023-24 Full Year Slates - The Shryke Draft
I'm not really buying into the potential of The Fall Guy. Movies about filmmaking rarely take off and does anyone even remember the show it's based on?
I also think a golden opportunity was missed in making it a dumb action-comedy instead of a tentpole version of The Player with Gosling in the Tim Robbins role.

2023-24 Final Standings !!!
This is it. The official final standings of the 2023-24 Reelsociety Annual Draft.
No surprise here, as expected, the Top remains the same compared to the previous weekend. Tranny dominated the season, with no one being a danger to him this year. Congrats buddy, you had a terrific, balanced slate, and not just the huge Barbie. You completely deserved this second victory in a row.
1. Trannyspeare - $1,591,151,402
2. Spectrespeare - $976,801,018
3. Screenspeare - $955,664,388
4. Bankspeare - $828,097,221
5. Walleyespeare - $815,575,862
6. Shrykespearemi - $798,812,623
7. Ronspeare - $581,896,428
8. Chienspeare - $485,988,716
9. Sixspeare - $467,300,435
No one else reached the billion dollar bar, although Spectre and Screen finished less than $50M from it. Good job guys.
At 4, 5 and 6, Banks, Walleye and Shrykemi battled it out til the end too. Banks made a late surge from the bottom to 4th in a couple of months, that was impressive.
Boosch, I’m sure you made Patrick proud. It wasn’t easy to take over his slate in the middle of the draft without preparing it, you handled it great
It’s worth noting that Ron finished well above myself and Six with a slate consisting of only 7 films, and not 12 ! The Aussie never picked his 12th film in the draft, and never replaced 4 films that were never released. Six and I did all the replacements, and had 12 films, and yet we ended up a good $100M behind Ron ! Sure, we were deeply impacted by the strike delays, but still. For the Irish and the French, that was a year to forget !
I updated the first post of this thread with everyone's slates and results.
Thanks to you all for playing all year long.

Re: 2023-24 Full Year Slates - The Shryke Draft
Now that our new draft is on the way, here's a little recap of the best and worst choices made in each round of the previous draft, which will show that last year, round 7 was more fruitful than rounds 5 and 6, and that you can draft a few good films in the late rounds. I left out the films that were not released or delayed out of the game. From Round 8, I only listed the best pick.
Round 1
Best pick : Barbie (duh) $636M
Worst pick : The Marvels $84M
Round 2
Best : Oppenheimer $329M
Worst : Wish $63M
Round 3
Best : Kung Fu Panda 4 $185M
Worst : Ruby Gillman $15M
Round 4
Best : Godzilla x Kong $181M
Worst : Exorcist Believer $65M
Round 5
Best : Trolls Band Together $103M
Worst : Night Swim $32M
Round 6
Best : Insidious Red Door $82M
Worst : The Book of Clarence $6M
Round 7
Best : Five Night at Freddy's 137M, but also Bob Marley ($96M) and Anyone But You ($88M)
Worst : The Last Voyage of the Demeter $13M
Round 8
Best : Paw Patrol $65M
Round 9
Best : Poor Things $34M
Round 10
Best : Priscilla $20M
Round 11
Best : Civil War $56M and Argylle $45M
Round 12
Iron Claw $35M, although it was drafted by Screen, it was picked up by Shrykemi on the WW when Screen dropped it.

And to think, this time last year I was so annoyed I didn't draft The Exorcist Believer, and was convinced it would make $150m.
And what was I on when I picked Ruby Gillman??? I thought it would be a sleeper family film. I blame being past my baby's due date and the anxiety around that (even though I was drafting during labour!!!)

Re: 2023-24 Full Year Slates - The Shryke Draft
Looking back at it, I had a pretty good draft. Didn’t really take a bust and had a couple best of round picks (Trolls/Five Nights). My main issue was taking so many TBDs to the point where I had to make 5 waiver pickups for my 12 film slate (but didn’t use my waiver priority )
Well, that and not drafting Barbie lol. Nothing to be done to catch tranny this year, he crushed it.

Re: 2023-24 Full Year Slates - The Shryke Draft
Five Nights at Freddy's was such an elite pick in the 7th round. Clearly there are no gamers among our ranks because there's no way it would've fallen that far if there were
I also have to give Screen a ton of credit for nabbing Insidious in the 6th round. Landing a film that's part of an established horror franchise that also had the boost of the original cast returning at that juncture is terrific value. Same goes for Civil War in the 11th.
And six, at least you have a completely reasonable alibi for the head-scratching Ruby Gillman pick. Imagine if that happened this year instead, you might've beaten out Chien for the honor of selecting Red One!
As for Night Swim, it's the only pick I made last season that I wish I could have back. I put way too much stock in M3GAN's breakout the prior year and just assumed that Universal/Blumhouse could recreate that success with a killer swimming pool movie. And maybe in a different world where Night Swim was even a semi-competent horror movie, it could've been an early January hit, but alas that wasn't the case.

I remember being shocked when you grabbed Ruby Gillman in round 3 last year, Six. Although I never thought it would be such a terrible pick.
Honestly, I had never heard of Five Night at Freddy's before preparing for last year's draft, do I'm definitely not a gamer indeed

Fortunately I’m a gamer so I knew it well Although I waited longer than I would’ve otherwise because of the simultaneous release on Peacock (which fortunately not many people used)
Re: 2023-24 Full Year Slates - The Shryke Draft
I was convinced the PG-13 rating would kill Five Nights at Freddy's. But then I found out the game had a fanbase under 18.

I do fear that all of the shit we've given you over that pick is actually increasing the odds of Red One becoming a hit. Hopefully some scooper is waiting until Halloween to drop another Dwayne Johnson Pissgate story that will make families consider other options this holiday season (may I suggest Gladiator 2?Chienfantome wrote: ↑May 10th, 2024, 6:12 amLaugh it up, guys. Everyone will have forgotten the story by November. A lot of these same people think Chris Kyle and Tim Ballard are heroes and not the liars and assholes they really are.

Re: 2023-24 Full Year Slates - The Shryke Draft
I'm not overly concerned about all the troubles the production of Red Note may have suffered. Troubled productions don't necessarily mean troubles at the box-office. If the film is well sold and is something the audience is craving for at the right time, no backstage problems will prevent it from being a hit.
I remember World War Z was plagued with troubles and everyone thought it would translate into a dud at the BO, and it was one of the biggest hits that year.

I remember the production problems and poor test screenings Gravity had, leading to it getting delayed a full year. It ended up making millions and winning a boatload of Oscars.
