Re: 2017-18 Full Year Slates (Division A)
Just to weigh in...
Dunkirk is an ensemble film - Cillian Murphy is the lead, but so is Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance and Kenneth Brannagh. Hell, it even has a dude from One Direction to attract the ladies.
Americans don't know the incident? So what - it's a war film, that's all people need. Does the intimate knowledge of specific historical event correlate to the desire to see it? I think not.
It's been a long time since a WWII film has made 200m. Yep, but as we constantly see in this game, past trends are broken. It's a Nolan film, it's a war film, it'll appeal to an older audiences, it'll open modestly and hold very well. Not sure if I see it making 200m myself, but will leave the prediction to UDM's analysis next week

Re: 2017-18 Full Year Slates (Division A)
All time, there have been five World War II films that grossed $100 million domestically. All of them had an American main character.
And I really don't think older audiences will go see it due to the lack of American characters or appeal and because these are the kinds of people that typically only go see one movie a year (which was probably something that was nominated for Best Picture, most likely when Hacksaw Ridge hit the cheap theatres or Hidden Figures) and instead watch eight hours of Fox News a day. I feel it's going to be strictly Nolan diehards and 70mm buffs that will see this one and I wouldn't be surprised if theatres began dropping it to one show a day or completely by the third week.
To change the conversation, I have to wonder why the hell Lionsgate is expanding to 2,500 theatres on The Big Sick. Yes, it's been playing well in 300 theatres but small markets are never going to see a film about an interracial relationship or one with an Asian lead on a show a lot of people don't watch. How to Be a Latin Lover (not the greatest comparison but it was also a successful movie with what the studios would consider a specialized audience) made money but Lionsgate never really expanded past the 1,200 theatres they opened it in. There's going to be a lot of empty auditoriums this weekend on that one (though Wish Upon's auditoriums will probably be empty too, I was expecting 500 theatres on it rather than 2,200). It's shades of A24 opening It Comes at Night in so many theatres again.

W might want to consider replacing Renegades, as it's been indefinitely delayed.

Hopeing for great things from Atomic Blonde.
Re: 2017-18 Full Year Slates (Division A)
Tracking's in the low 20's but Metacritic's gone down slightly (it was 68 last week, now it's 64). It depends on how word-of-mouth is.

Well, Valerian is gonna be a worse round 5 pick than Warcraft was, after all.
