But not on John Bigboote (it's Bigboo-tay!).

I would also recommend Scanners. It's not the best sci-fi you'll ever see, and probably has dated badly, but at least it has the late and great Patrick McGoohan!JohnErle wrote:
I never heard of Unknown Origin, and Naked Lunch is one of the few Cronenberg films after Scanners that I haven't seen, and this conversation is as good a reason as any to finally check it out.

Dick Smith's makeup effects are still very good. I'm surprised they weren't nominated for an Oscar.

I saw the Scanners trailer with the exploding heads as a child and it scarred me for life. I was too squeamish to watch it for years. Enough time has passed and the f/x are probably dated enough that I could watch it now without incurring any more psychological damage.

Or else it will cause you to regress into a unsalvagable blubbing mess.
That's what BBC's Ghostwatch did to me when I tried to rewatch it 15 years after it first ensured I could never sleep again.

I'm a blubbing mess most days of the week, so watching Scanners would at least give me an excuse.
I'd never heard of Ghostwatch, and I'm slightly disappointed to learn that it's not about a phantom timepiece. You can't have it all, but it does sound very intriguing. That's going on my must-see list.

You can watch all of Ghostwatch on Youtube, though it's not ideal as it's split into 10min segments. Sadly, it's lacking in haunted chronometers.
Re: #31 - The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai... (1984)
It probably won't have the same effect on me since I know what I'm in for and the presenters are not people I know already as credible newsmen, but the fact that so many Brits were apparently fooled and scared shitless makes me want to see it. One thing we're lacking in this spoiler-filled internet age is movies that can surprise a great many people.
And also, since this has been hanging there far too long without an appropriate response...

I watched the extended version of this on Sunday and I'm still thinking about now.
You know how effective a film is when you have a character named John Small Berries and no one brings attention to it.

On the DVD. There is an option to watch the theatrical version or the extended version. The extended version mainly adds a new opening (with a cameo by Jamie Lee Curtis as Buckaroo's mother) but it explains a lot.

I remember the JLC scene, so I guess that's the version I originally saw when Netflix still mailed DVDs to your... actual mailbox. What a weird concept.
