Tranny Tackles the Cinema: The Films of 2/7

Post by transformers2 »

Lowrey and Burnett forever!!!

Bad Boys for Life once again easily topped fellow holdovers 1917 ($9.5 mil) and Dolittle ($7.6 mil) to hold onto the top spot for the third consecutive weekend with a solid $17.7 mil (-48%) Super Bowl weekend haul. Sony's stunningly huge threequel now sits at $148 mil through three weeks and seems like a good bet to bag at least $170 mil by the end of its run.

Things weren't as great for the pair of wide newcomers. MGM/Orion's low budget fairy tale horror flick Gretel and Hansel mustered an unspectacular $6.1 mil, which was good enough for the #4 spot on this dreary winter weekend. However, Gretel and Hansel was a runaway success compared to fellow wide opener The Rhythm Section. Paramount's Blake Lively-led spy thriller put together the worst ever OW for a film that opened in 3,000+ theaters with a dishearteningly low $2.7 mil. While the studio will be lamenting The Rhythm Section's projected $30+ mil loss, at least everyone who did go out and see it can say they contributed to a historic moment in cinema history.

Speaking of notable openings, 2020 saw its first solid limited debut with The Assistant logging just under $20k per theater at 4 sites. Kitty Green's Harvey Weinstein-inspired drama boasts a strong timeliness that could allow it to become a mini-breakout once it starts expanding this week.

Wide Release:
Harley Quinn is back and looking to win favor with audiences after the generally poor reception of Suicide Squad. Can she and her new friends in the Birds of Prey (Warner Brothers) pull that off? Perhaps!

While there's no reviews out as of now, the reactions following its initial screenings last week have been pretty positive with the action sequences, cinematography, sense of humor and Margot Robbie's performance as Quinn receiving praise. If this level of enthusiasm carries over to the critical consensus, DC's attempted renaissance that has been in the works since Wonder Woman will be one step closer to actually coming to fruition.

As for its box office performance, obviously it's not going to touch Suicide Squad as it's a much smaller scale production that boasts an R-rating and features no established characters in its supporting cast. It does however, seem likely to match or somewhat exceed the results of last spring's Shazam! ($140.4 mil) barring crazy bad WOM. Robbie's return as Quinn is a solid enough hook for comic book fans, the grittier yet more comedic tone could attract some new people into this world and most importantly, this is the first true superhero film to hit theaters since Spider-Man: Far from Home last July-which could potentially boost its ceiling.
Prediction: $35-65 mil OW/7-14 Top 5/4-8 PTA/mid 6 to low 7 IMDb/$115-175 mil overall BO
Price (FEB-APR): $32 ULT/$30 BO
Worth Putting on Your Slate?: In a season that appears to be relatively low on potential blockbusters, it's probably worth it.

Limited Releases:
Hot off the heels of the conclusion of the 2020 edition, one of the final unreleased acquisitions from last year's Sundance Film Festival is about to make its way to theaters. The Lodge (Neon) was moved out of its initial November release to avoid competition with the awards bait, which could very well prove to be a brilliant decision by Neon.

This atmospheric horror flick about a woman (Riley Keough) that gets trapped in her fiance's (Richard Armitage) isolated mountain vacation home with her soon-to-be stepchildren (Jaeden Martell, Lia McHugh) is arriving at a time where horror fans are feeling really down. Within the last five weeks, these poor souls have had to endure two of the worst received films (The Grudge, The Turning) that have graced multiplexes during the era of public exit polling.

While it seemingly lacks any mainstream appeal, The Lodge could scratch the itch for diehard genre fans that are looking to cover up the stench of the particularly pungent trash they've been exposed to since the calendar turned to 2020. At the very least, the good reviews (80% RT, 72 Metascore) its received should attract the attention of fans of Ari Aster, Robert Eggers and other budding indie horror filmmakers that have amassed solid followings in their brief careers thus far, which should allow to gain some traction on the limited circuit.
Prediction: $65-95K OW/3-8 PTA/high 6 to low 7 IMDb/$1.5-5 mil overall BO
Price (FEB-APR): $4 ULT/$2 BO
Worth Putting on Your Slate?: It's definitely worthy of consideration

And Then We Danced (Music Box) is a movie I wasn't even aware existed until I sat down to write this. From what I could gather from some quick research, this is a coming of age story set in the Republic of Georgia about a dancer auditioning for the National Georgian Ensemble whose world is turned upside when he meets another male dancer that's trying out for a spot in this prestigious troupe. It currently boasts an 8.1 on IMDb and a 92% on RT, so this is definitely a title to keep an eye on when you're throwing slates together this week.
Prediction: $10-25K OW/0-8 PTA/high 7 to low 8 IMDb/$20-60K overall BO
Price (FEB-APR): $2 ULT/$1 BO
Worth Putting on Your Slate?: Even if it doesn't set the limited market ablaze, it's high IMDB score/low price tag pairing makes it worth gambling on.

Weekend Projections:
1.Birds of Prey $53 mil
2.Bad Boys for Life $10.5 mil
3.1917 $7 mil
4.Dolittle $5 mil
5.Jumanji: The Next Level $4 mil

PTA: Birds of Prey, The Lodge, The Assistant, And Then We Danced, The Traitor

Tune in next week when six breaks down a crowded Valentine's Day Weekend slate that includes a video game icon making his big screen debut, a Will Packer-produced romantic drama, an American remake of an acclaimed Swedish movie from not too long ago and a sinister reimagining of a 70/80's television series.

James Spader looks like Hunter S. Thompson in that picture.

Well, Birds of Prey's looking like a bust despite better reviews than Suicide Squad. Warner Bros. shouldn't have marketed it as its sequel with the reboot coming next year.

Meanwhile, HSX is unreadable now with their refusal to ban all of the men's rights people and trolls (though with that Baron guy gone, it's mostly the Snydercut fanboy starting fights). It's like what AskReddit has turned into.

34 mil? Ouch. I actually wonder if part of this is a little over-saturation of Margot Robbie. I love her - but it seems like she's been everywhere lately.

I dont think so. She's been in bombshell and in once upon... Hollywood last summer.

The trailers looked awful I still dont know what the point is besides Harley Quinn being weird. Plus suicide squad sucked
