Hot Streak

Post by Ron Burgundy »

Just trying to identify the great runs by actors

(Possibly a strange first choice, but I'm watching Glengarry Glen Ross)

Kevin Spacey 95-99
(The Usual Suspects (95), Outbreak (95), Seven(95), A Time to Kill(96), L.A Confidential(97), The Negotiator(98), A Bugs Life(98), American Beauty(99))

I'm not including the smaller movies, just want to identify the 'runs' where an actor couldn't miss, +4 years minimum.

Any other inclusions?

John Cazale, 1972-1978.

The Godfather
The Conversation
The Godfather Part II
Dog Day Afternoon
The Deer Hunter

The only five movies he'd ever make and they're all classics.

I was reading up on Eddie Murphy the other day, and his streak in the 80s may not have been perfect critically, but commercially it was stunning.

48 Hrs. (1982)
Trading Places (1983)
Beverly Hills Cop (1984)
The Golden Child (1986)
Beverly Hills Cop II (1987)
Eddie Murphy: Raw (1987)
Coming to America (1988)
Harlem Nights (1989)

all of these were hits, yes even The Golden Child

There was a flop in Best Defense but that only became an Eddie Murphy movie in post-production.

At least we got a hilarious SNL monologue out of that movie.

Jim Carrey 94:

2/4/94 - Ace Ventura
7/29/94 - The Mask
12/16/94 - Dumb & Dumber

Hell his next few years had no duds either:

6/16/95 - Batman Forever (OK not a good movie but great for kids at the time)
11/10/95 - Ace Ventura 2

6/14/96 - The Cable Guy

3/21/97 - Liar Liar

6/5/98 - Truman Show
Alexandra Daddario: Eyes of a Demon, Face of My Future Ex-Wife

I was thinking of Jim Carrey's streak during a showing of Man on the Moon at a theatre a few days back. Man on the Moon wasn't a box office hit but it got him some of the best reviews of his career.

Add Man on the Moon and his streak of critical and/or financial hits continued into 2000 with his two box office hits Me, Myself and Irene and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, ending with the critical and financial failure of The Majestic in 2001.

Will Smith's run from 95-98 is pretty great:
Bad Boys
Independence Day
Men in Black
Enemy of the State

While I have some notable issues with a couple of these (Widows, Queen & Slim), Daniel Kaluuya is currently in the midst of a nice run himself as actor:
Sicario
Get Out
Black Panther
Widows
Queen & Slim
Judas and the Black Messiah
Nope
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
BRING BRENDAN FRASER BACK TO THE BIG SCREEN DAMN IT
