Best of 2022 So Far

Post by transformers2 »

Now that we've officially reached the halfway point of the year, what are your favorites of 2022 so far (and what non-English language titles do us Americans have to look forward to in the fall/early next year?). Here's my very horror/thriller-centric list:
1.The Batman
2.Jackass Forever
3.Ambulance
4.Emergency
5.Scream
6.X
7.Everything Everywhere All at Once
8.Watcher
9.The Black Phone
10.Men

Honorable Mentions: The Northman, On the Count of Three, Spiderhead (yep, I was one of the few that thought this was great)

And the worst by a zillion miles: Moonfall

I haven't seen a truly great film this year (my last 10/10 was Gunda over a year ago) but I have given four titles a 9/10.

Navalny
A Hero
Cow
Crimes of the Future

Maybe Marcel the Shell with Shoes On will improve things when it plays near me on the 15th.

Vortex might be the most disappointing film this year. I'm amazed Gaspar Noe could make a film so dull.

Here are my Top 10 films of the year so far (I didn't include US films released in France in 2022 but in 2021 in the US) :

The Top 4
Et j'aime à la fureur (Flickering Ghost of Love Gony By) : A documentary about life and cinema, a true gem.
Next Sohee : a Korean drama about a young woman working in a call center and how it's slowly destroying her mind. Overwhelming
Les Passagers de la nuit (The Passengers of the Night) : the melancholic and touching portrait of a French family in the 80's
RRR : entertainment at its very best.

6 very good films that follow
Decision to Leave : Park Chan-wook's latest proves he's one of the best directors today, and he does so in a mood very different than usual, mysterious, funny, sensual.
Top Gun Maverick : the best Hollywood action film I've seen in ages
Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy : Hamaguchi's film was only released this spring in France, marvellous.
A Plein Temps (Full time) : a French drama about a single mother hoping to get a new job but having to face obstacles like it's a suspense film. Thrilling and conscious.
Un monde (Playground) : life and its difficulties, injutice, on the scale of a school playground.
Un autre monde (Another World) : almost the same title as the previous film but a very different one, the new by Stéphane Brizé starring Vincent Lindon, a social and human drama.

Playground was supposed to play near me a few months back but the engagement was canceled. Luckily, it is now on Hoopla, a streaming service that you only need a valid library card to use.

Loved Playground. Think it's a 2021 film as it was released to the public then?

Depends on your personal criteria. If you go by initial festival premiere date, it would be 2021. If you go by initial theatrical/streaming release date in your home country or whatever country you're living in at that point in time, it would be 2022 (unless the person in question lived in Belgium or the Netherlands).

Also, reading Chien's favorites is always a tremendous reminder of how uncultured I am.

I have only seen one movie released in 2022. It was called The Long Night and it sucked hard. Definitely not recommended. Hopefully I'll have a chance to see some better movies before the year is over.

Yeah, as Tranny said, it has basically only played on festivals in 2021, and was released in Belgium, but in the rest of the world, it's been released in 2022.

Decision to Leave was really surprising in its tone for a Park film.

Don't feel that way. I just happen to live in the most cinephile city of the world, so it's just easy for me to see all these films.

And the Netherlands!

My rule is always by year of first public release anywhere in the world. I see beyond the borders of my own country ;)

As I said, none of them had a public commercial screening until this year.

Festivals don't count. Hell, you even have filmmakers reediting their film after a fest screening.
