Critics' Choice has a pretty large member base, so there's likely a fair amount of people like her among their ranks. Chris Evangelista from Slashfilm shared part of his ballot and he had Kristen Stewart in Crimes of the Future among his Best Supporting Actress noms, which is a very outside the box choice if you ask me (and one that I would agree with completely. She was terrific in that movie.)

If any Supporting Actress performance that isn't getting talked about that deserves to, it's the performances of Noemie Merlant, Nina Hoss, and Sophie Kauer in Tár. If they were American or English, they would be on every best performance list.

Meanwhile, if you want an example of this Critic's Choice voter that I know, here's one thing she believes: she refused to vote for Parasite for Best Picture as it wasn't in English.

Nina Hoss might not have the volume of award nominations to back it up, but her performance has gotten plenty of critical praise. She along with Claire Foy has been at the top of nearly every Best Supporting Actress snub list that I've seen.

And as unfortunate as this is to hear from someone who has enough cache to be a Critics Choice member, it's not surprising. Plenty of Americans thumb their noses at anything that isn't in English.

The critic embargo for Babylon has been lifted and it's a mixed bag, with quote whores raising the Metacritic to a low green of 63 while the more reputable critics either judge it as so-so or outright dislike.

It might sneak in as a Best Picture nominee at the Oscars (probably knocking out a populist title like RRR or Top Gun: Maverick) but it won't get too much awards attention.

I guess the Academy will have to give Best Documentary Feature to a political documentary this year. It seems like in most years, they'll find a way to give it to something that appeals to the apolitical/politically conservative crowd (*cough*My Octopus Teacher*cough*).

Kind of surprised The Fabelmans was eligible for Best Original Score, as I was sure most of that score was adapted from classical pieces.

The songs from Turning Red not making the Best Original Song shortlist ends Billie Eilish and her brother's shot at back-to-back Oscars. I was also sure Mel Brooks's song from The Automat would make the shortlist, which would have given him a shot at being the oldest Oscar nominee ever. However, I do see Diane Warren is still trying to get that elusive Oscar for any movie that needs her talents (she wrote another song for another film this year almost no one saw in hopes of a nomination).

I really don't get the buzz for Angela Bassett's performance. It felt like nothing new was added from the previous Black Panther that suggests this was awards-worthy. I don't even recall the role getting praised that much when Wakanda Forever came out.

Or might these just be awards for her long career and not winning an Oscar for What's Love Got to Do with It?

It's because last year's Golden Globes fell apart because of the diversity issue, and this is an attempt to compensate.

While that's almost certainly why Bassett won the Golden Globe, the buzz surrounding around her performance has been building since the film premiered with a sizable of critics/fans saying she deserved an Oscar nom for it. It would be pretty shocking if she ended up any winning additional major awards, but as Boosh said, voters could see this as an opportunity to turn this into a career retrospective of sorts.

It's a total slap in the face to the streamers to consider their films "made-for-TV movies". First of all, the terminology is extremely inconsistent as you see Glass Onion, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, Navalny, and Turning Red, all titles designed or intended for streaming but played in theatres, in the regular categories. Second, Weird had For Your Consideration screenings for Oscar voters and I'm sure Prey's showings through the American Cinematheque back in August were as well. Disney even had a DCP made for the Comanche version of Prey.

All streaming titles should be eligible for regular categories of awards shows. Yes, even the third installment of 365 Days.

I'm honestly not shocked, I'm only surprised it comes now.
I'm more surprised by the inclusion of Audrey Diwan's Happening in the "Best Feature film debut" category, while Happening is actually her second feature film. I don't understand that one.

Everything Everywhere All at Once winning all of the Original Screenplay awards is such a laugh, considering how they basically ripped off a Simpsons episode as well as Marvel's Multiverse. Also, anyone else find it odd that during all of Kayne and Kyrie's scandals, no one brought up the anti-Semitic content of the film?
