2022/2023 Festivals/Awards Thread

Post by Screen203 »

I know we already have a thread for the 2021-2022 season, but with Sundance already passed and SXSW upon us, I thought it might be a good idea to start this thread.

On the topic of SXSW, Everything, Everywhere, All At Once premiered to mostly positive reviews, although some of the larger publications aren't huge on it. I believe The Lost City premieres tonight, and I'm sure X and Apollo 10.5 will premiere soon after.

It seems like most (though not all) of the buzzier films this year could be doccumetaries, as films on subjects like Sheryl Crow and Gabby Giffords are being highlighted.
It's not destroying. It's making something new.

I have to imagine most major labels have given up on Baena at this point. His films are typical critic bait with little audience appeal and are instantly forgotten after a few weeks. A company desperate for accolades like Vertical might take on his new one but otherwise, don't expect a big deal unless it gets unanimous raves.

I'd be surprised if X got good reviews outside of horror sites. It's the kind of horror film that is only popular with the gore and tits crowd that refuses to shut up but never supports the films they claim to like during their initial runs (where were they for Studio 666?).

And the Daniels style seems to be something that will divide traditional critics. Swiss Army Man had the same issues. Ironically, most critics liked the solo effort The Death of Dick Long, even though all of the marketing has distanced itself from that film (and for good reason, in my opinion).

This explains why Ethan wasn't involved with The Tragedy of Macbeth.

And opening the festival with a zombie comedy really doesn't seem like the right move. Zombies have been on the way out and when's the last time Hazanavicius has had a success? I could see this being on the flops of the festivals.

Speaking of possible flops, I really don't see Armageddon Time taking off. It reads like that This is the Night movie hardly anyone saw but with Reagan instead of Rocky Balboa.

Also, expect David Lynch's new one to be added in the forthcoming lists. It's supposed to be debuting at Cannes.

The Lynch rumour was a massive mistake.

It all came from a tweet from someone from the BFI who said there was a surprise film from the director of two of his favourite movies and one of his favourite shows. So everyone thought it was Lynch. But I think it was Ethan Coen as that doc came out of the blue. Lynch has denied he has anything in the festival (well, he said movie, so it could be a TV pilot), both in interviews and on his Youtube channel.

Not much in the way of surprises on the Cannes lineup, but I will say that I didn't expect the French remake of One Cut of the Dead to be the opening film or Riley Keough to have her directorial debut screen here. Very excited to hear about how many people faint, vomit and walk out of the Crimes of the Future premiere.

I have a feeling that Crimes of the Future will be yet another pedestrian recent Cronenberg title. He's been playing it safe in recent years, choosing to let his son explore the themes he used to handle.

And I wasn't too big on One Cut on the Dead so I'm sure I'll really hate Z. I will be really surprised if it gets a US deal (Hazanavicus' last major remake was never given a US release).

And the Lynch thing makes sense. I'd remembered that he had a TV show in the works and the first episode of Twin Peaks: The Return was screened at Cannes. It probably is the first episode of this series, even if he is denying an appearance (but we know the kind of person Lynch is).

Seems like I haven't heard from Le Bon or Kline in a long time. Both should have gone on to bigger things as actors.

Something that we probably weren't expecting: reviews for Elvis are better than the reviews for Three Thousand Years of Longing. Sure, neither has a great consensus of reviews (Metacritic has Elvis at 62 while Longing is 57) but I'm sure we were expecting the latter to have far more praise.

The Cannes winners were rather cliche, with Triangle of Sadness winning the Palme d'Or and the Grand Prix being a tie between Close and Stars at Noon. The former and latter already have US distributors while the middle probably gets one soon (Netflix released the director's previous film).

Really the only thing that shocked me out of Cannes is that Elvis ended up tying Broker for the longest standing ovation of the festival. Did not expect a largely non-American audience to be that enthusiastic about an Elvis Presley biopic.

Here's the full of list winners from the Competition slate:
Palme d'or: Triangle of Sadness
Grand Prix (tie): Stars at Noon/Close
Best Director: Park Chan-wook, Decision to Leave
Best Actress: Zahra Amir Ebrahimi, Holy Spider
Best Actor: Song Kang-ho, Broker
Best Screenplay: Tarik Saleh, Boy from Heaven
Jury Prize (tie): EO/The Eight Mountains
