This is probably too late for the film but Netflix did win their appeal to the Academy with Apollo 10 1/2. It is now on the Best Animated Feature qualifier list.

Kind of surprised we still take the National Board of Review Awards seriously. It's a lot like the Golden Globes but you can tell they've been paid for by the studios far more than usual (remember last year when it felt like half of the awarded titles were given awards the day their critic embargoes were lifted?).

It feels like The Playlist of awards shows: please everyone, get a blurb or notice in the promotional materials, and hope no one cuts through the red tape.

Nightmare Alley and West Side Story both ended up getting nominated for Best Picture, so clearly those Disney payoffs worked!!!!

But that was a very weak year and both were essentially guaranteed Best Picture nominations as a result of their big Oscar campaigns, even though Nightmare Alley wasn't widely seen and turned out to be one of del Toro's biggest flops, even after Disney tried to boost the box office by releasing a black and white version.

What I'm getting at is that a lot of the time, it feels like the National Board of Review doesn't actually pick the best movies, only the ones the ones studios want them to believe is the best or what's about to come out. They usually seem to pick two or three movies that end up being non-factors in the awards as they got to see them or voted on them before anyone else could see them. I also seem to recall one year, they started their vote before having seen a film that ended up being a big Oscar contender.

AFI's Top 10:
Avatar: The Way of Water
Elvis
Everything Everywhere All at Once
The Fabelmans
Nope
She Said
Tár
Top Gun: Maverick
The Woman King
Women Talking

Special Award Winner: The Banshees of Inisherin

Nothing overly shocking outside of She Said getting a spot. Top takeaway for me is that The Woman King seems like it has a pretty good chance to snatch one of the 2-3 Best Picture nominations slot that are considered to be "open" at the moment.

She Said got better reviews than Elvis, which is the real surprise here. I guess Elvis is going to be this year's Bohemian Rhapsody: a not well-received film that lets popularity silence any criticisms of quality (aka The Baz Luhrmann Formula).

As someone who is not a fan of Baz Luhrman, I can say that Elvis is far far better than Bohemian Rhapsody

Comparing Elvis to Bohemian Rhapsody is pretty silly. While I was no fan of the film, the way that it goes about telling Elvis' story alone is enough to make it a notable deviation from the music biopic formula Bohemian Rhapsody followed every step of the way. On the awards front, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it landed a Best Picture nom and Austin Butler won Best Actor. It would also be a far deserving winner of Best Editing than Bohemian Rhapsody, but that's not exactly an impressive accomplishment

Austin Butler winning an Oscar would show how weak this year was for movies. Taron Egerton got no awards buzz for Rocketman a few years back and I think it's generally agreed that was a better biopic.

Hollywood films have long lost their flavour, but some are still good, and Elvis definitely was one of the rare good Hollywood films.

Surprised someone remember Inu-oh. This was dead on arrival in theatres despite solid reviews.

I know someone who's a Critics' Choice Award voter. Her tastes are...interesting, to say the least.
