I think Best Outstanding British Film could have been five nominees. Nominating See How They Run for Best Anything is pushing it.

There's a numbers of unusual nomination rules going with the BAFTA. Why are there only 5 nominees for Best Film and 6 for Director and in each Acting category? Why are there only 4 nominees for Best Animated films opposed to the 5 that Documentary and Film Not in the English Language get? Why do they not have an award for Best Original Song?

I'm baffled by the award popularity of the disappointing Everything Everywhere All at Once and The Banshees of Inishering.
This was a mediocre year for American and English-speaking cinema, in my opinion (at the least the "big" ones). I have yet to see some nominated films that are yet to open in France, like Tar, Women Talking, The Fabelmans or The Whale, but when I look at my favorite films of 2022, 90% of them are not in English.

See I'm the exact opposite, The Banshees of Inisherin and EEAO were very high on my list of favorites for the year and I found them to be significantly better than the other major awards contenders this year (it should be noted that I've yet to see Triangle of Sadness or All Quiet on the Western Front). I'd be thrilled if they cleaned up here.

As for general sentiments about the awards shows, I never expect to have a lot of agreements with the voting bodies behind these ceremonies. My taste doesn't often align with theirs (they're not the only ones right guys? ;) and barring some unforeseen miracles, I don't expect that to change. But I love movies too much to not be interested in this shit and I will eagerly plant myself in front of the TV on March 13th for 3 or so hours and vocally react to about 90% of the winners.

Yeah, it's another year where ignorance wins out over quality. In what universe is Top Gun: Maverick considered better than the completely shut out Decision to Leave? Elvis was not really a contender until the past few months while there are a lot of very token nominations (did anyone see Causeway, To Leslie, or Tell It Like a Woman?). The fact that the winner might be a film that five years ago wouldn't have even been on too many Top 20 lists shows just how dumbed down the industry has gotten.

And Tran, you like everything. You would give an 8/10 to a commercial for paint if it had explosions and Ryan Reynolds playing Van Wilder as a paint salesperson.

Depends on who directed it. If it were Michael Bay or David Leitch, it would be at least an 8. If it's Shawn Levy, that's probably a 7. Rawson Marshall Thurber? 5, no higher than 6.

It's directed by David Leitch and shows off everything that's wrong with American cinema.

And further showing the ignorance of the industry, Ikiru was not nominated for a single Oscar during its original release and is now considered one of Japan's greatest cinematic achievements. Its English language remake, Living, got a Best Actor Oscar nomination and will likely be totally forgotten by the time it hits Netflix. That's like if the Psycho remake got Oscar nominations and the original hadn't.

Final verdict: 8.5/10. Better than Bullet Train, but not quite on the level of Hobbs & Shaw and Atomic Blonde.

Meanwhile, I saw Blonde led the Razzie nominations list. Seeing how Blonde actually wasn't horribly reviewed (50 on Metacritic) and would get an Oscar nomination, I have to wonder if this is a smear campaign rather than about the quality of the film. Another Netflix film about the film industry, The Bubble, got far worse reviews and audience response but only one nomination.

Since I have to wait three weeks for the Oscar shorts compilations to play at my nearest theatres, how I expect those categories to turn out.

Animation: The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse. Apple produced it and industry darling J.J. Abrams was involved. This more than likely makes it the one short many of the voters watched. Though you have My Year of Dicks hoping to be this year's The Windshield Wiper, that one doesn't have the muscle of a billion-dollar monster.

Live-Action: An Irish Goodbye. It's the only short in this category entirely in English. Though Le Pupille has Disney backing it and has an English dub available, voters seem to almost exclusively just watch the shorts that aren't subtitled.

Documentary: The Martha Mitchell Effect. Mainly on process of elimination. There are three American-produced shorts nominated. How Do You Measure a Year? is out of the running as it's not political. This leaves The Martha Mitchell Effect and Stranger at the Gate. While Stranger at the Gate was produced by The New Yorker, they do not have the promotional muscle Netflix has. In addition, The Martha Mitchell Effect can be easily found on Netflix, making it the potential winner.

I'm sure I will vastly disagree with what I expect the Academy to choose on the first two while I'll probably wait and watch the winner of the documentary category after the ceremony.
It's like what Lenin said...I am the walrus.
