And the Winner is...:

Bacurau

Very much a 2 horse race between Minari and Bacurau-which took home the crown by just a single point.

Nomadland is the next Best Picture nominee being spotlighted and I thought it was only fitting to use a review that Boosh-who is the clear top champion of this year's Academy Award winner for Best Picture in these parts-posted after seeing it back in February for the featurette:

Now this is a movie worth seeing. In a year where most Hollywood films were either overhyped, underwhelming, or not released at all, we finally get something that makes us realize that the industry isn't dead yet. Going entirely against the typical mold of acclaimed, award-winning films, Chloe Zhao's latest is a meditative study of a community often marginalized: the people without a home. It's reality that the American film industry often chooses to ignore, instead making us watch the fantasies the people in charge want. The film is not so much 107 minutes of a modern-day nomad. It's a call to action, telling us no more of the sameness that has taken over cinema (and yes, I know that Zhao's next film is an Marvel adaptation but is she any more of a sellout than say, the Internet deity that is named Christopher Nolan?). We, as cinephiles, want how things really are. We want that 99% of those stories the powers that be say can't be told. We want truth in film.

And Chloe Zhao might be that savior for American cinema.

Other notes:
-Nominated for 3 awards (Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Cinematography) today
-Won 3 Oscars, Best Film at the Independent Spirit Awards, the BAFTA Award for Best Film and the Toronto Film Festival's People Choice's Award.

Next up for Best Picture featurettes is the big winner thus far today Sound of Metal, which unfortunately for you guys is once again penned by me:

Being deaf is something that hearing people likely can't even begin to conceive and although nothing short of becoming deaf can offer any significant insight, Sound of Metal does a great job of providing a very basic understanding of what it might be like to live with that ailment. Through exceptional sound design that distorts audio and even goes completely silent on occasion, writer/director Darius Marder puts the audience in the shoes of a punk band drummer (Riz Ahmed) that is losing his hearing at a rapid clip and how he struggles to cope with the impact his condition is having on his life. While the actual narrative is a bit choppy and needlessly melodramatic at times, the compassionate, visceral way Marder tackles living with deafness and Ahmed's extraordinary performance turn Sound of Metal into something noteworthy.

Other notes:
-Nominated for 8 awards here (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Cast, Best Original Screenplay, Best Score) and already won 3 (Best Cast, Best Score and Best Original Screenplay).
-Premiered at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival to rave reviews, but was held out of that year awards race by Amazon.

Flanigan should write a thank you to Chien because his 5-point vote allowed her to come over the top rope and take out Viola Davis at the last second.

2nd to last Best Picture featurette is for Soul. It's also the 2nd to last featurette written by me tonight:
Safe to say Pixar redeemed themselves with their second original film of 2020 after dropping the depressingly plain Onward back in March. By evoking all of the best qualities (jaw-dropping animation, well drawn-out characters, irreverent humor, an overarching message about some aspect of the human experience that will go way above the head of 99% of the kids that watch it) associated with the Pixar brand, Pete Docter and Kemp Powers have concocted a stunning movie that conjures up the same type of profound magic as the best work (Toy Story, Toy Story 3, Up) the iconic animation studio has produced during their 25-year history.

Other notes:
-Nominated for 3 awards today (Best Picture, Best Score, Best Animated Feature) and winner of the Best Animated Feature
-1st Pixar title to receive a Fantaverse Best Picture nomination since Coco in 2017

In an all too fitting conclusion for this year's award show, a theatrical title that was sold off to a streamer closes out the Best Picture featurettes. Here are my thoughts on The Trial of the Chicago 7:

The peaceful turned unruly protests at the 1968 Democratic Convention and subsequent trial of the "Chicago 7"-a group of anti-Vietnam protestors accused of inciting a riot by the FBI-was the perfect historical vessel to receive the Aaron Sorkin treatment. Sorkin's knack for staging riveting courtroom scenes and deploying one-liners to provide levity at exactly the right time adds a layer of pure entertainment to this dramatization that actually makes the film's points on serious matters such as the government trying to scare citizens out of exercising to right to protest injustice by blatantly abusing their power and continuing to fight for justice regardless of what obstacles stand in the way stick harder.

Other notes:
-Nominated for 2 awards today (Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor)
-1st Aaron Sorkin-involved project to receive a Fantaverse Best Picture nomination since The Social Network.
