2021 Fantaverse Awards

Post by transformers2 »

Welcome all to the 2021 Fantaverse Awards. It was a weird year for movies for obvious reasons and that unconventional nature of the cinematic year reflected in a slate of nominees that were released over the span in 14 months via some avenues that we may not expected. But alas like the movies (and humanity for that matter), we carried on and here we are celebrating the top pieces of cinema that we were able to catch during this stressful and tragic period.

Before we get on with the ceremony, I'd like to thank everybody that participated. While we're operating with a smaller crew than usual, I immensely appreciate your help in keeping this tradition honoring our favorite cinema alive. Here's the rundown for this afternoon or evening's festivities depending on where you're at on this crazy little rock we call Earth:

And the Winner is....:

Youn Yuh-Jung, Minari

As Chien said once the nominees were announced, it is a little odd that a decorated veteran Korean actor is in the breakthrough category. However, she was the heart and soul of Minari and was a complete unknown to people that aren't overly well-versed in Korean cinema (myself included), so she's deserving of every accolade thrown her way.

Hey all, popping in and out of this as I eat dinner/hang out. Couldn't do that if i was at the Oscars.

Happy with that breakthrough result. Not bad for a 70 year old

For our 2nd featurette of the show, here's Chien with some words on The Climb:
I thought The Climb would be a sort of Mumblecore comedy about two guys slacking on a bike before I went and saw it. Turns out, it’s not. It is, indeed, the story of two friends. A story of friendship, more precisely, and how it can be a bumpy road, just like a love story. A funny story, but also thoughtful, and smart, and moving. Because it’s not just two friends slacking. It’s a film with a carefully elaborated narration, a virtuoso one. But also a truly cinematographic film, with carefully elaborated sequences.
That’s a lot of carefully elaborated stuff for one film. I went in thinking I knew what The Climb would be. I came out of it under its spell, a spell of fun, of intelligence, of surprise, of melancholy. Of everything that makes friendship, and life, so valuable.

Other notes:
-Nominated for 2 awards tonight (Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay)
-2nd consecutive Best Picture nominee to premiere at Cannes in 2019

And the Winner is....:

Paul Raci, Sound of Metal

Daniel Kaluuya was my top choice by a wide margin, but Raci was undoubtedly terrific.

Moving onto our 3rd Best Picture featurette for First Cow:
Plot summary: A taciturn loner and skilled cook (John Magaro) has traveled west and joined a group of fur trappers in Oregon Territory, though he only finds true connection with a Chinese immigrant (Orion Lee) also seeking his fortune; soon the two collaborate on a successful business, although its longevity is reliant upon the clandestine participation of a nearby wealthy landowner’s prized milking cow.

Other notes:
-Nominated for 7 awards here (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cast, Best Cinematography, Breakthrough Performance) and has already picked up 1 trophy with its Best Adapted Screenplay win.
-Made waves for getting pulled from US theaters by A24 right before the lockdown went into effect before subsequently receiving its initial wide release via VOD in July
