Benedetta is finally coming out. All is good in the world.

Meanwhile, Red Rocket's going to be Letterboxd's favorite film of 2021, as that place loves to suck Sean Baker's cock.

I wonder if they knock off the overpraise on Michel Franco this time around.

And I'm surprised Amirpour got another movie after The Bad Batch was such a disaster. It seemed to kill that Cliffhanger remake she was planning.

The Venice hype train is off to a HOT start with Power of the Dog, Spencer, The Hand of God, Dune and The Lost Daughter all being met with considerable enthusiasm out of the gate. I missed the extravagance, hyperbole and non-stop takegiving of festival season so fucking much.

But how many of those will be remembered by Oscar time? Netflix has so many awards contenders each year that there are less like a Mike Trout and more like a machine gun when it comes to getting those awards.

As for a Best Picture favorite, I think The French Dispatch will come out as the last man standing once it's all said and done. Though of course, the Academy usually hates American auteurs despite Anderson seemingly being convinced he's French nowadays. But they do love Latin American filmmakers so maybe Spencer ends up winning, though I can't see Kristen Stewart winning many statues.

Toronto Awards:
People's Choice Award: Belfast
People's Choice Award, First Runner Up: Scarborough
People's Choice Award, Second Runner Up: The Power of the Dog
People's Choice Award, Documentaries: The Rescue
Documentary, First Runner Up: Dion Warwick: Don't Take Me Over
Documentary, Second Runner Up: Flee
People's Choice Award, Midnight Madness: Titane
Midnight Madness, First Runner Up: You Are Not My Mother
Midnight Madness, Second Runner Up: DASHCAM
Platform Prize: Yuni

Although Toronto's lineup was a little shallower than both Venice and Telluride when it comes to potential prestige pics, this should erase any doubt towards Belfast's ability to contend this awards season.

I was surprised to see that Belfast was getting good early word. A feel-good story about the Troubles sounds like a terrible idea on paper while Branagh can be hit-or-miss.

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see if Scarborough gets a US deal. English Canadian films are often a hard sell and major American distributors seem to hate any sort of realism. From reading the premise, it makes me think of Girlhood so maybe it ends up with a small label such as Strand or MUBI.

Looking at Gold Derby's Best Picture favorites for the Oscars and I'm not getting some of their choices. The Power of the Dog being the favorite makes some sense but will the Netflix bias remain? I'd put Belfast ahead for now.

But the weird thing for me is that they don't see any Best Picture buzz for some titles that have gotten great early word such as The French Dispatch, Spencer, and C'mon C'mon but favor the already-forgotten CODA, the silly-looking House of Gucci (and seeing how Scott's The Last Duel, another film they were low on, flopped this weekend, I wouldn't expect much favoritism for this one either), and the not really for awards Nightmare Alley. And though I'm sure it will be good (though I'm already sick of the trailer playing before everything), Licorice Pizza does not strike me as an awards contender.

Most hilariously, someone there has Dune winning Best Picture. That only gets nominated if the field is extremely weak and the film does way better than expected, though with it debuting on HBO Max earlier than the first theatrical screenings in some markets, it could be more popular as a bootleg for those who don't want to pay $15 for a month.

Their odds right now are mostly a joke.

Awards buzz is still super speculative at this point, but I do agree that some of their picks don't make a lot of sense based on the current information we have. Tossing aside the obvious commentary on how cartoony the accents appear to be in House of Gucci, Ridley Scott's presence is hardly a guarantee for awards glory these days while the absence of nearly all the main performers from Belfast in the supporting categories that Focus has confirmed they'll be running all of the adult actors in (Judi Dench is the only nominee they're currently predicting as to where Variety has Dench, Jamie Dornan, Ciaran Hinds and Catriona Baife as projected nominees right now with the latter two being the projected winners) is downright puzzling.

I also forgot to mention how they don't see Cyrano as a Best Picture nominee. I'd say this is the most likely contender out of MGM's titles, between its positive early word, it being the rare musical this year that's lived up to expectations, and it being from awards perennial Joe Wright.

And speaking of musicals, maybe In the Heights gets some buzz and sneaks in as a lower-tier Best Picture nominee despite being a flop this summer. I like it more than West Side Story at this point, unless West Side Story blows everyone away.
