Post by Buscemi »

I'm surprised to see Avatar in Best Picture, the lack of notice for An Education, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs's nomination (it will probably get snubbed in favor of Ponyo at the Academy Awards) but I like the Best Musical Score nominations for The Informant and Where The Wild Things Are.

Wow, there's actually some surprises in there.

Tobey Maguire snuck in for Brothers, something I don't think anyone saw coming.

Somehow, Emily Blunt got nodded for The Young Victoria which nobody has been talking about. This should help it this weekend.

And I didn't know that A Serious Man was a comedy or musical. Surprising that it didn't get any attention other than Best Actor in A Comedy.

Julia Roberts in Duplicity? They must've ran out of good, or even average, performances to nominate.

I am loving all the love that Glee got, three nominations including Best Comedy/Musical. But Modern Family only gets one? They deserved some acting attention, with a great cast that they have.

Everything else seems to be in order, and I'm guessing this will solidify Avatar's place in the Top 10 in January.

I would have put in Amy Adams's performance in Sunshine Cleaning in place of Julia Roberts.

Emily Blunt got nominated for The Young Victoria since this is the Foreign Press doing the nominations and they nominate a lot of international films (also note The Last Station and An Education).

And A Serious Man is a dark comedy, therefore putting it in Musical/Comedy.

I had the exact same thought about Amy Adams as well, Busc.

While, I'm happy about some of these, such as Up in the Air, (500) Days (if Amy Adams didn't get a nom, I think Zoe should have got one over Julia or Sandra from Proposal, or even one of Meryl's...Yes, she is good, but the awards people just kiss her fucking ass over and over), but what the fuck is up with The Hangover? yeah, it was funny, but from a bunch of cheap laughs and racial stereotypes, and let's not forget the joke about date rape. I kinda want to say "what the fuck?' about Avatar too, but I'll wait until I see it.

And House gets a nom, when Sons of Anarchy (which is easily the best drama, if not show on TV doesn't? The problem with these award shows is they lack balls. Anything edgy will get dismissed, while the safe shit gets play. I am happy about Glee, however, especially for Lea Michelle, who has a voice to die for.

Personally, I think The Hangover is the funniest movie in years. And apparently so did a lot of people, as it's the highest grossing R-rated comedy of all-time. A $40M OW to a total of over $250M means a lot of repeat viewers.

So, don't they normally make you pick one movie to be nominated for?
ACTRESS - COMEDY OR MUSICAL
Sandra Bullock - "The Proposal"
Marion Cotillard - "Nine"
Julia Roberts,"Duplicity"
Meryl Streep - "It's Complicated"
Meryl Streep - "Julie & Julia"

This is the most shocked i am ever been reading a list of nominations in my entire life. I am very happy overall with the nominations. Some definite head-scratchers (Avatar for Best Picture, Sandra Bullock for The Proposal, others) but i am very excited to see Inglorious Basterds nominated for Best Picture.

On the other hand the fact that Brad Pitt wasn't nominated for Inglorious Basterds and It's Always Sunny In Philldelphia didn't get nominated is pretty sad IMO.

I have to agree. Waltz's performance sure is, though.

Considering that a comedy is a film that makes you laugh and The Hangover undoubtedly got more laughs than any film in 2009 (and maybe this whole decade) it probably should be nominated for best comedy. If you're going to give a comedy award, it should probably be about hilariousity, not really nitpicking about acting, direction, set design, etc. That's what the dramatic award is for.

What would you consider award-worth funny? The other 4 nominees are nowhere nearly as funny as The Hangover. I wouldn't even count Julie & Julia as a comedy, but that's neither here nor there.
