One Year Without Shryke

Post by Buscemi2 »

I know that we've done some tributes to Shryke but I remembered that we didn't do a post about reflections of the site and media since we lost Shryke last year.

I got the idea from watching another DreamWorks Animation production recently, Orion and the Dark, and thought to myself, "Shryke would have loved both this and The Wild Robot".

So I got the idea: what movies/TV shows/books/music would have Shryke enjoyed if he were still alive?

Things I think he would have enjoyed:

Movies:

The Wild Robot: obviously. It was from the people behind How to Train Your Dragon.
Orion and the Dark: I think he would have loved the message.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: he loved animation and superheroes.
Oppenheimer: he enjoyed some of Nolan's movies and I think he would have appreciated the feel.
Poor Things: he was proud of Emma Stone's success.
The Fall Guy: Shryke probably remembered the original show and I'm sure he would have found the stunts fun.
Alien: Romulus: it was considered by some the best since Aliens. And I'm sure he would have thanked my area for Cailee Spaeny.

Music:

The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess: yes, I'm kind of selfish for including it as I credit the album for helping my own mental struggles and helping me come out, as well as the album being from a local in my area but here's why I think Shryke would have loved the album. Much of the album has an 80's style that Shryke would have truly appreciated. Also, I think Shryke would have enjoyed the storytelling of the album. No, he probably wouldn't have listened it over and over to the point where they would have gotten a T-shirt, candle, tote bag, and beer cozy referencing the album (sorry, not sorry) but I feel songs from the album would have been on Shryke's rotation.

What other things do you think Shryke would have liked if he was still with us on the site?

Great idea, Boosch.

Funnily enough I've been listening to the Cure's new music a lot quite recently, in advance of their latest album out on Friday. It's really good, referencing their album Disintegration, and I did wonder what Shryke would have made of it. Perhaps we would have finally picked the same track during our yearly music countdown.

And I imagine he would have had nice things to say about Chappell Roan.

It still sucks that he's not around here to herd us and ensure some positivity in the community.

Perhaps it's time for another list?

I think Shryke would have loved Sabrina Carpenter too. I couldn't get into her work but I think he would have.

You know, I'm really thinking we could have created the non-toxic version of r/popheads.

Great thread idea Boosch.

Aside from some previously mentioned stuff like The Wild Robot, The Fall Guy and Alien: Romulus-which all feel like slam dunks, I would say A Haunting in Venice (he was a big fan of Branaugh's Poirot movies), IF (I thought about him after I watched it since the themes about the importance of preserving your creativity as you grow older reminded me of his relationship with writing novels), Saw X (big return to form for that franchise that he was totally on board with in its earlier stages), Mission-Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One (more propulsive stunt hijinks from Cruise and co!) and The Holdovers (a bittersweet Christmas dramedy with coming-of-age and buddy elements just feels like something he'd love). I'd imagine he'd enjoy Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire too despite its generally weaker reception than Afterlife, but I haven't seen that one yet, so I don't know for. Twisters, American Fiction, Plane, My Old Ass, Are You There God, It's Me Margaret?, Trap, The Creator and Saturday Night feel like strong possibilities as well.

Musically, I'd say Spiritbox's last EP The Fear of Fear and some of the funkier tunes ("Cinderella", "Toro", "Cherries & Cream") from Remi Wolf's new record Big Ideas.

We're closing in on one of the two times of the year where his presence is particularly missed in this these parts with the year-end music countdown being just a hair over 2 months away. Hopefully we're making him proud or at the very least, slightly envious he's not around to contribute his own selections to balance out the garbage the rest of us have chosen

As for a potential countdown, what did you have in mind six?

Dunno, really, didn't we talk of a horror one? Might be too late for that now. Maybe another decade? 70s? 90s?

We did talk about the horror one last year after Shryke's 80's countdown had ended and that's on me for not putting it together in time for this year. I won't make the same oversight next year.

As for a decade list, I could do the 90's easily, but the 70's would be a no go as I've seen embarrassingly little from that decade.

Yeah, it's something I'm going to have to start rectifying early next year once I'm done with all the year-end stuff from this year. There's a combination of factors responsible (my parents aren't really into movies, my friends and cousins urging me to watch shit from the 80's/90's when my love of movies started to really blossom when I was a teenager, dedicating so much time to watching current titles to avoid adding additional decades to my cinematic blind spots, being a degenerate NFL/NBA fan) for this oversight, but it's still relatively inexcusable

You're in for a treat. You can watch the 99% of movies filmbros claim to have seen but actually haven't.

The great thing about the 70s is that even the mainstream, commercial stuff is pretty good. There's a massive difference in quality between The Towering Inferno and, say, Skyscraper.

I actually have a brief moment in a new script I wrote about how 70's movies are different in a good way compared to modern movies. The main character is a visual effects artist who wants to make a Harryhausen-styled movie but work gets in the way.

While I didn't know him as well as everyone else here, I imagine he would have probably liked Dune: Part 2, Inside Out 2, and Conclave (in addition to The Wild Robot; I thought the same while watching it a few weeks ago). While it may seem like a bit of a left-field choice, I could have also seen him liking The Killer (the David Fincher one; I believe he was a fan of his).

I also love the idea of a horror countdown.

I'll also attempt to re-join the music countdown this year - I loved The Rise And Fall... as well (which probably shocks no one here); I also really like Chelsea Wolfe's new album.
It's not destroying. It's making something new.

A horror countdown would be fun, but I think we just missed our window of opportunity to do one. Probably better to wait until next October. Personally, I'd like to do a Film Noir countdown, but I suspect the younger members of this forum would have even less to contribute to that than to a 70s countdown.

If the goal is to pay tribute to Shryke again, how about an animated countdown? We know he loved his trained dragons, and animated films always seemed to make appearances on his lists. And animated films would give the younger members a better chance to contribute, and it would seem appropriate during the Thanksgiving-Christmas season when there's usually a glut of animated films to choose from.

An animated move countdown is a terrific idea, John. While I'd have no problem starting it in the coming weeks, I feel like it may be more appropriate to do in late April/early May to coincide with the 2nd anniversary of his passing.

I've been watching a bunch of animated movies with my infant daughter as of late, so I'm up for an animated countdown.

It's also a genre I'm not that into that I know what my favourite ones would be, so it'll be fun to have a think about that.
