Screening The Releases - April 29th

Post by Screen203 »

Last Week

The Bad Guys suprised with a solid 24 m OW, but every other new release disappointed (The Northman with 12 m, The Unbearable Weight... with only 7 m, and and on the arthouse front, Petit Maman underwhelmed with an 11 k average, and The Duke didn't do much better with a 7 k average). Fantastic Beasts... absolutely collapsed with a 67% drop to 14 m, falling below Sonic The Hedgehog 2, which added 15 m, having a 48% drop. The only other standouts were Everything, Everywhere, All At Once and The Lost City, which both had very light drops.

This Week

Memory

I really don't have that much to say about this one. Liam Neeson films have a pretty consistent range of around 10-15 m. The trailer for this is better than the ones for most of his recent films, but his last film Blacklight recieved horrible reviews (sub 10% on Rotten Tomatoes), and while this is directed by Martin Campbell, I could see it being affected by both Blacklight's reception and Doctor Strange opening the next week.

I see a 4 m opening and 10 m total

I wouldn't reccomend it in Box Office or Ultimate.

If you do take it, it will give you a 5 on IMDb, 0 PTA, and 1 Top 5 point.

Firebird

I haven't seen much buzz around this film. Reviews are decent, but I'm not sure if Roadside (who's most successful releases tend to be released semi-wide) really put any effort into the marketing.

Don't take it in Box Office. In Ultimate, it might be an okay choice if you didn't take Petit Maman.

It will get you a 7 on IMDb and 2-3 PTA.

Hatching

This buzzy horror film seems like the best choice this week at first glance. I'm not so convinced, however. It's from IFC, who tend to go semi-wide with their films, and I really expect the PTA to suffer because of that.

Don't take it in Box Office or Ultimate.

If you do take it, it will get you a 6 on IMDb and 0 PTA points.

Join us next week for six's take on two movies actually worth putting on your slates.

Is Open Road some kind of tax shelter company or are they just the only people in Hollywood that think C-grade Liam Nesson projects can potentially make money in the 2020's? Their business model just continues to puzzle me beyond belief.

I think they pick them up for post-theatrical purposes (same reason why Lionsgate and other indie labels kept picking up Bruce Willis's later films). Movies like Memory will do decently at home and look good for television deals (it does feel like the kind of thing Showtime would air a lot). Open Road doesn't seem to spend much money (case in point: their logo, being the opposite of the thousand of production companies that fold after one movie as they spent more money on their logos than good scripts) but they have a lot of output deals. Running in 2,000 theatres is just sweetener to make the product seem more attractive.

Often the theatre count is part of the contract, either with the director, actor, financier, or all of them. So basically a distro will dump it and spend little on marketing as VOD is the main appeal

They must be making a pretty penny from VOD/foreign sales if something like Nesson's previous project Blacklight-which carried a reported $43 million price tag- ends up being profitable

I think Blacklight was an independent film picked up for domestic distribution, as Neeson is an actor whose name can get a project produced solely on international sales. Open Road more than likely paid around $5-10 million, which mostly would have been made back on home video and TV deals.

Open Road seems to make some kind of money off of these low-budget action movies - I don't really understand why, though. They used to almost be a prestige label, even winning Best Picture, but all of the sudden, they completely switched focus to these types of movies.

Also, I realized I forgot the Top 5 and PTA for this week. Here it is -

Top 5 -

The Bad Guys - 14 m
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 - 9 m
Fantastic Beasts... - 6 m
The Northman - 5 m
Everything, Everywhere, All At Once - 5 m

PTA -

Everything, Everywhere, All At Once
Petit Maman
The Bad Guys
Sonic The Hedgehog 2
The Northman
