SIX TIPS, OR HOW TO PLEASE YOUR SLATE – THE FILMS OF 11/1
If one were to naively hope that cinema isn’t just a refuge for lowest common denominator nonsense, last weekend would have made one’s dream come true. No one seems to like the Venom films, and yet the Tom Hardy supervillain films have performed well… until now, when Venom: The Last Dance fell below expectations to a $51m opening weekend (let’s ignore its solid global performance). Surprising success came from indie darling Anora, which expanded to a somewhat reasonable $900k and broke into the Top 10. And Conclave, a po-faced thriller about the emergency selection of a new pope, has exceeded expectations opening to 4th with an impressive $6.6m. Should we have faith in the studios again? Well, let’s not get too excited.
Not to be confused with the niche Belgian arthouse drama, Here (Sony) has worse prospects. An adaptation of a graphic novel, it’s a drama that drifts through time but focuses on the same space. It’s a little like A Ghost Story, only 50 times more expensive. Robert Zemeckis directs, and the film stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright and a shit load of CGI to make them look young. This is the kind of film that seems to be going for the big feels, and setting its locked-in sights for the Oscars. But the visual approach (apparently the camera doesn’t move from its spot) is very arthouse. The film didn’t come out in any major festival, instead opting for LA’s AFI fest last week. And boy, even that was a mistake. Critics have slated the film as cloying and so awards-baity that Ron Howard wishes he made it. Hanks still has some appeal to an older audience, but it won’t be enough to overcome the poor response so far. Despite being the only wide release this weekend, it still will struggle to hit the Top 5, and will drift away in coming weeks as the awards hopefuls expand and the tentpoles rise. It’s $6 in Ultimate, and $5 in BO, but even at those reasonable prices you’ll find better value elsewhere, so get the hell away from Here.
Many are claiming Juror No.2 (Warner Bros) will be Clint Eastwood’s final film. Well, Warner have decided to let him go out with a whimper. Clint’s latest is a courtroom drama about a juror who hides a secret linking him to the murder case he’s on. Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collete lead the cast. It seems like a bog-standard drama, but something strange is afoot. Warner have some sort of objection to the film, and are only putting it out in a few dozen screens this weekend, with no plan to expand. And marketing has been non-existent. Yet, unlike Here, this film has been getting warm reviews from the critics, out of its AFI Fest screening. Seems like Warner have dropped the proverbial ball, and lost the case for giving 94 year old Clint a fine sendoff before he trots into the sunset. As for this game, there’s a small chance the film may get some PTA, but really this awful release strategy makes it a dud for the $9 in Ultimate and the $7 in BO it will cost. If it’s screening near you, go see it just to prove the fat cats wrong.
So far so negative this week, but there’s hope in A Real Pain (Searchlight). This is Jessie “Woody-Allen-Minus-the-Pervert-Allegations" Eisenberg’s second feature as director. Like his first, When You Finish Saving the World, it’s a wry dramedy focused on a core character relationship, this time two estranged cousins (Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin) reconnecting on a trip to Poland to visit the land their grandmother fled during WWII. Since its Sundance debut, it’s been receiving strong reviews, and there’s been talk of awards for Culkin, who plays the optimistic, charismatic, but ultimately directionless cousin to Eisenberg’s surefooted white-collar worker. Coming out in 4 theatres this weekend, expect it to win the PTA crown, and suck in a few more next week. It won’t make big bucks as it expands, but for $4 in Ultimate it’s worth a punt.
Finally, Soundtrack to a Coup D’Etat (Kino Lorber) is a fascinating documentary about some jazz musicians who broke into the UN to protest the new prime minister of the Congo. The film takes this moment to discuss colonialism and the West’s relationship and investment in African nations. Winning an award at Sundance, this doc should draw in fans of history and jazz music. Despite its long run time (2.5 hours), it’s coming out in a single theatre in NY this weekend, so it may get some PTA points. It’s not worth anything in BO, but isn’t the worst pick to plug your Ultimate slate.
Predictions for the weekend
1. Venom: The Funeral March - $22m
2. Smil3 coming soon - $5m
3. The Wild Robot - $4m
4. Here but not for long - $4m
5. Conclave - $4m
PTA: A Real Pain, Soundtrack to a Coup D-Etat, Anora, Memoir of a Snail, Juror
Next weekend sees a whole lotta films coming out, from wide releaases like The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Heretic, and Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom, to indies Weekend in Taipei, Bird, Christmas Eve in Miller's Point, and Small Things Like These. One of us will take a look

Re: SIX TIPS, OR HOW TO PLEASE YOUR SLATE – THE FILMS OF 11/1
Warner Bros. planned to release Juror #2 as a Max exclusive. That's why they're dumping it into only 50 theatres. I think you could do a list of dumb things Warner Bros. has done in the past decade that could be as long as Martin Luther's 95 Theses. Though I don't think there's a door you can nail it on.
As for Here, I saw it's getting multiple screens at one of my local theatres (that and Anora). I guess old people are expected to see it. I don't expect a weekend over $10 million but Tom Hanks has that appeal.
Edit: Juror #2 is getting good early reviews. Yeah, Warner Bros. is made up of a bunch of morons.

six, is Juror #2 getting a proper theatrical release in the UK? If so, that makes the dump job it's getting in the States even more baffling.

The only advance info I have here is that it's getting 300+ screens in the UK, which is wide but not super-wide. The equivalent in the US would be around 1200 theatres. So still a lot more than the US

Re: SIX TIPS, OR HOW TO PLEASE YOUR SLATE – THE FILMS OF 11/1
Interesting, thanks. That puts it in about 150 less theaters than 'Salem's Lot got a few weeks back. Hopefully it will do better than that one so WB can eat shit.
At the bare minimum, they could've given it the same kind of domestic run they gave House Party and Magic Mike's Last Dance early last year (1,500 or screens. While still not ideal, it would've at least provided Eastwood with an iota of respect for his contributions to the studio over the last 50+ years. But instead, Zaslav effectively doubled down on the middle finger he gave him when Discovery first took over and he openly mocked the holdovers from the previous regime for greenlighting Cry Macho in a meeting. Their dedication to being the biggest group of clowns in Hollywood at the moment continues to amaze.

That is poor and signs would suggest a $4m opening. It being Halloween night last night may mean a larger multiplier though.

Here's going to play old and they aren't the type to go out on Halloween.

That or some people saw the PG rating and thought it was for families (it's not).

I can take the column for the 8th.
I really don't understand why Warner Bros. dumped Juror #2. Clint Eastwood has been one of their most consistently successful directors/actors, who in addition to lots of box office hits has given them multiple Best Picture winners; which makes the decision to dump this even more puzzling, especially considering besides Conclave and We Live In Time there haven't been many successful dramas this fall. Another strange decision was dumping Caddo Lake on Max; reviews have been better than either of the other Shyamalan productions this year, and while it wouldn't have been a huge hit it probably could have made more than The Watchers at the very least.

It's not destroying. It's making something new.

Re: SIX TIPS, OR HOW TO PLEASE YOUR SLATE – THE FILMS OF 11/1
Caddo Lake just wasn't liked by the studio, having spent three years on the shelf before debuting, but it was cheap enough not to write off. Same case with Salem's Lot.
As for Juror #2, Zaslav isn't a film guy. He only cares about money and creating his own legacy. Clint wasn't part of that legacy.

Re: SIX TIPS, OR HOW TO PLEASE YOUR SLATE – THE FILMS OF 11/1
Weekend Estimates:
Venom: The Last Dance $26.1 mil (-49%, which would be the lowest 2nd weekend drop of the franchise if it holds)
The Wild Robot $7.6 mil (+11 in weekend #6!)
Smile 2 $6.8 mil
Conclave $5.3 mil
Here $5 mil
We Live in Time $3.5 mil
Terrifier 3 $3.2 mil
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3/Shingham Again $2.2 mil
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice $2.1 mil
PTA:
A Real Pain $60k (3rd best PTA weekend of the year behind Anora and Kinds of Kindness)
Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat $9.1k
Anora $7.5k
Venom: The Last Dance $6.3k
Conclave/Memoir of a Snail $2.9k
The expectation remains that Juror #2 won't report, but Deadline has stated that its set to bank somewhere in the $250-275k range from its 35 theaters-which is a pretty good performance all things considered.
