I went back and forth on Gone Girl as well, but in the end I didn't see enough breakout potential. A two and a half hour adult-leaning thriller teaming Fincher and Affleck sounds like a safe $100 million to me, but probably not much more.

And I'll never doubt Marvel again either. Ant-Man is every bit as ridiculous a concept as Guardians Of The Galaxy, but it's Marvel so the fanboys will show up. I'm not expecting another GOTG, but another Thor 2 seems like a perfectly reasonable expectation.

I'm sure I'll love Gone Girl the film but Gone Girl the box office mega hit? Doubt it. It'll do well but Fincher's films tend to have a ceiling around $100-120M. I have several other options that I think can clear that number so it was pretty easy to not include it.

Ant-Man sounds ridiculous but it's written in my Top 20 in stone. If I'm going to lose this thing, it won't be because I didn't include a Marvel title.

Gone Girl is getting good reviews, and on Fincher's name I could see this doing well, especially around award time. That said, I agree that 100-120m is the best I expect but I figured it was worth a shot. My other options all had many cons to face the pros. They were

Spy - Ultimately I felt McCarthy's stock has dropped, and that Paul Blart 2 was the better comedy option.
Fantastic Four - It ain't Marvel
Pan - Peter Pan movies rarely seem to be huge hits, and I'm not sure if Wright is a mainstream director
Exodus - Might do what Noah did, but it too much of a wildcard
Annie - Another risk in a crowded Christmas weekend
Pixels - Feels more like Turbo than Despicable Me

Wouldn't shock me at all if I'm wrong, but I think the Too-many-superhero-movies backlash begins with Ant-man. America is going to get sick of seeing the same genre sooner rather than later I'm feeling.

I'll believe that when it starts happening. And right now, it's everything but happening.

At least I know who Ant-Man is, which is a lot more than I could have said about any of the Guardians Of The Galaxy at this time last year.

With Paul Rudd in the lead and a comedy director behind the lens, it should capture the right tone by embracing the absurdity and having fun with it.

I went back and forth between Ant-Man and Gone Girl several times, so I just put them both on my bench.

Surfer got his picks in just under the wire, and now the deadline has officially passed. I suppose I could let it slide if someone were to submit a slate in the next few hours, but don't let word get around that I'm a nice guy.
