Number One, by Number Six

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! hope its wonderful!

Arvo Part
“Fratres”
(1977)
I actually have had 2 years of violin classes, and let me tell you, I hated every second of it. It was just so difficult to learn. I suppose because i hated it that is why i never got any good. Knowing what i know though, I can definitely appreciate what someone can do with the violin. Also I have had 4 years of piano lessons (which i did like, and am decent in), I thought they blended really well together. to be honest, I didn't like the first minute or two of the song, but it really got better the further it went along. Loved the ending

Low, “Secret Name” (1999)
this was a lovely song too

your list as a whole was a little bipolar for me. Some songs i really did not like and found them downright weird and some songs just totally blew me away and i wanted more! hah. There wasn't much middle ground

my favorites of your list

94. Sun Kil Moon, Blue Orchids
92. Talking Heads, Road to Nowhere
87. Spiritualized, I Didn't Mean to Hurt You
77. LCD Soundsystem, All My Friends
67. Bob Dylan, Shelter From the Storm
64. Red House Painters, Drop
62. Talking Heads, This Must Be the Place (Naïve Melody)
60. Nina Simone, Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
54. Interpol, Hands Away
51. Rolling Stones, Wild Horses
43. Johnny Cash, Hurt
29. Sun Kil Moon, Duk Koo Kim
25. Jeff Buckley, Hallelujah
20. The Beach Boys, God Only Knows
7. Sam Cooke, A Change is Gonna Come
5. Tom Waits, Blue Valentines

PS am i supposed to post my song today, or am i supposed to post it tonight for tomorrow?

Becs

I am not a huge Bowie fan. he has some good stuff and some not so good stuff. Under Pressure is one of the best from either Bowie or Queen. Great pick.

The best of Becs
100 Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps
99 White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
97 Tool - Sober (would be waaay higher on my top 100)
86 Queen - I Want to Break Free
82 Simon & Garfunkel - Sound of Silence
77 David Bowie - Changes
72 Tool - Schism
71 The Cranberries - Zombie (Love this song)
65 John Lennon - Imagine (should be in everybody's top ten)
55 Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
54 Radiohead - 2+2=5
52 Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus
51 Queen - Killer Queen
41 The Beatles - Hey Jude
40 Queen - The Show Must Go on
35 Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall
29 Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (I miss Annie)
28 Elton John - Tiny Dancer
26 David Bowie - Space Oddity
23 The Beatles - Let it Be
22 Aerosmith - Dream On
18 Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence
13 Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
11 U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday (my second favorite U2 song behind New Year's Day)
10 Radiohead - Creep
7 Queen - Who Wants to Live Forever
2 Radiohead - Karma Police

Side note, your friend Nathan has an incredible top 25. I am going to listen to some of the bands that I haven't heard of. Anybody that loves Ball and Biscuit and Wilco gets their unknown music listened to by me.

A big chunk of your list was unknown to me and since I wasn't here for the list I didn't get to hear most of it. Of the ones that I knew these were the best of. As a fellow noise listener it was great to see Mogwai, GYBE and EitS. I did get to hear Battle and it grew on me quickly.

96. Ryan Adams, Come Pick Me Up
88. Johnny Cash, Folsom Prison Blues
85. Godspeed You Black Emperor, Blaise Bailey Finnegan III
82. Radiohead, The Tourist
78. Neil Young, Old Man
72. The White Stripes, Fell in Love With a Girl
56. Kate Bush, Running Up That Hill
51. Rolling Stones, Wild Horses
46. Sigur Ros, Ny Batteri
43. Johnny Cash, Hurt
41. The Smiths, I Know It's Over
40. Explosions in the Sky, The Moon is Down
35. Radiohead, Pyramid Song
34. Black Sabbath, Paranoid
33. Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Maps
28. Mogwai, Christmas Steps
27. The Rolling Stones, Paint It Black
26. The Stooges, 1970
25. Jeff Buckley, Hallelujah
24. New Order, Blue Monday
23. The Ramones, Blitzkrieg Bop
19. Radiohead, Idioteque
18. Battles , Atlas
17. Sufjan Stevens, Casimir Pulaski Day
14. Bob Dylan, Ballad of a Thin Man
6. Talking Heads, Once in a Lifetime
4. Leonard Cohen, Famous Blue Raincoat

It was ok but not great for me.

Banks

Of the top three I didn't like the Lauren Hill (great voice but the song didn't do it for me), the Adele was ok (there are much better sickly sweet pop singers around IMO) but I really liked that Kanye song. I had not heard it before so that is cool. Since I don't like most rap, I am excited when I find a song that I like. Since a big chunk of it is about being a "gangsta" and shooting people or about how great they are (yes I am talking about eminem and Jayz on these examples), usually I could care less.

Can you (or anybody) post the rest of Banks list?

In all fairness, Eminem talks about being great far less than most rappers, though rap almost always has to have some kind of bravado by nature. His newest album is really, really great.

Now first of all, I'm sure everyone can guess by who my #1 song is going to be, but before I get there let me just say a few things.

Not to devalue my number one pick, but I, like most of you, could consider my top 25 (or 35) my number one song on any given day depending on my mood. I think they are all great and can make me dance or sing along or rock out every single time. Going into this I knew that my music knowledge would not be as extensive as a lot of you because music as a hobby is preceded by 5 or so other obsessions that take up more of my time. (although you could effectively argue that during the past few months that it was my number 2 obsession taking up more time than anything except my continued education in film and attending film school). So I was looking forward to learning from a few self-proclaimed music snobs we have on here. Let me tell you, I've learned a lot. I've realized I really need to discover more classics from the 50s and 60s and even some big band and jazz from earlier decades. I've also decided that without a doubt, that the early 90s is a musical wasteland (lol, I know most, if not all, of you would disagree) the equivalent of the sahara desert ;) , you might find an oasis every now and then but they are few and far in between. I also want to thank all you guys for joining, I have found a few gems from all of you that I really love and have been on repeat on my ipod since you introduced me to them.

Do you remember the day when you realized that you weren't a kid anymore? that you had hopes and dreams and responsibilities and you would have to work hard and sweat and go through tough times and worries to get where you wanted to be or at least needed to be. You suddenly realized that everything you did, had consequences and you couldn't just play the day away and your biggest worry was what you would play with next. Maybe it didn't happen that quickly to you, maybe it took a few months or a year. For me, it was overnight, which if you've ever encountered, know that it can be a pretty big shock. Yes, it was exciting in a way, knowing that you have a future ahead of you, but it was really scary and lonely as well. Obviously, now that we are older we know that there are other people going through the exact same thing, but when it's happening to you, it seems like you are going through it alone. Everyone copes with this in different ways, during this time of coping there were two things in my life that helped me cope. One was film, I had always loved watching movies but during this time I started to study it and knew that that is what I wanted to do with my life. The second thing was Shakira. I know to most of you just see her as a shallow pop artist. I know it probably seems weird to you guys, but to me she represents way more than just a musician who makes music (who is not just in it for the money by the way, she really does love what she is doing and gives back to communities and charities and helps in any way possible). Her music spoke to me in ways other music didn't. I felt hope and happiness from her songs. I felt fun and adventure to be had and more often than not, her songs just transported me to another place, which is all I ask for in music to this day.

So on to the song. If Shakira is my favorite artist and I said that my top 25 songs could be my number one song any given day and there being 5 Shakira songs in my top 25, What makes this my favorite of hers. There are a few things, I think this song perfectly exemplifies what I was explaining in the above paragraph. I'm sorry this is in spanish again, nevertheless I think you will be able to tell what she is singing about (who really listens to the lyrics the first time listening to a song anyway). the video is very metaphorical (This is also my personal favorite video ever, another reason i picked the song as #1). The train tracks symbolize your road in life, the song starts off sad about the past or the mistakes you've made, but there is a transition and a realization that you can make different decisions and you can change your life for the better. I love the jump cut editing when she is dancing, they are a bit disconcerting and make you feel on edge but yet it still looks and feels graceful. I love that during the video she is working on something throughout the video and it comes to fruition at the end and also symbolizes the maturing of life. This song always makes me emotional, sometimes sad, sometimes joyous but always hopeful

Well, UDM,

I won't rag on your #1 choice. It's funny, you're probably the source of the two shortest song titles of the entire show ("Tu" and "No"), and they're both by Shakira. I did like "No", despite it being in Spanish.

As for your list as a whole, it averaged 5.75 per song, which isn't too terrible. We didn't have any overlaps, but you did have three songs that I ranked a "10":

Sheryl Crow, "Soak Up the Sun"
Stevie Wonder, "Superstition"
Lady Gaga, "Poker Face"

Other favorites included:

Bob Marley, "Three Little Birds"
Michael Jackson, "Billie Jean"
Smash Mouth, "All Star"
No Doubt, "Hella Good"
Kelly Clarkson, "Behind These Hazel Eyes"
Dido, "White Flag"
Timbaland, "The Way I Are"
50 Cent, "In Da Club"

My favorites that I had never heard before:

The Lovemakers, "Love is Dead" (LOVE this one)
Alison Krauss & Union Station, "New Favorite"
Dishwalla, "Candleburn"
The Veronicas, "Untouched"

Geezer is next. Who wants to be it'll be Rise Against Me, Nirvana!

On UDM

Dude, I think you already know what I'm gonna say about your Top 100, but brace yoruself anyway ;) It's safe to say that of all the lists here, yours was my least favourite. I think we approach music from opposite perspectives. I'm not exactly sure what that is, but all I know is that about 90% of your songs repulsed me or just left me cold. And I find it strange that you liked some of my songs, considering how different they are to your general taste. Perhaps that means you're more open than I am.

But that's not to say it was all bad. You had some good pop, like Michael Jackson Billie Jean, Del shannon's Runaway, Good vibrations. Hell there was even a great Beatles track. But for all of those good pop tunes there were 10 songs I didn't like to counter them. The worst culprits were the likes of the Black Eyed Peas, and Susan Boyle's homogenised pillaging of Wild Horses. I don't know, man, but I feel a lot of these songs are either lazy or manipulative, or both. They're the musical equivalent of rom-coms. Structured by numbers, wrapped around a thin vein of sincerety that pretty much disguises the nasty heart of a commercial industry. I know that sounds harsh, but I look at these songs that are soo generic that it almost feels as if the musicians aren't really trying, as if fame is their goal, and not expression. I'm sure there are pletny who don't consciously think like this, but from what they produce they just sound either callous or deluded. Their music is the same old sounds with the same old tired lyrics of breakup, heartache, leaving home, growing up, and so on. And I'm still hearing plenty of great new music these days so why aren't pop artists trying to push boundaries? Like Justin Timberlake did a few years ago.

At the very least I commend you for not caving in on your personal taste. Despite the bashing you got from the likes of me, you held true. And hey, we bizarrely shared Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah in our Top 100's. As for your number one song, I'll tell you this: I'm no fan of Shakira, but she is better than the majority of mainstream pop acts. Mostly because the lyrics of hips Don't Lie amuse me. This song didn't do much. It just seemed like another typical broken-heart ballad. But at least it wasn't the Black Eyed Peas!
