Top 50 of 2020 - The Also Rans

Post by silversurfer19 »

Been a while since i posted last, hope everyone is well. While I'm stuck in lockdown again prepping this countdown has given me a little distraction and now I'm very excited to hear what everyone has been listening to this past year. I have been enjoying Shryke and Leestu's countdowns on Facebook to start too.

Anyway, I thought with the upcoming countdown I would post a few songs that just missed the cut, as 2020, despite all its overwhelming rubbishness, had some really good music on offer. So, to tide us over until Shryke kicks it all off, here are a few to get us all in the mood to listen to some music.

Will Butler, 'Surrender'

The other Arcade Fire brother returned with his second record last year, headlined by this wonderful, soulful song that just, for a few minutes at least, helped you forget 2020 existed.

The Reflectors, 'Teenage Hearts'

For a moment you could be forgiven for thinking it was 1979, as this Buzzcocks/Undertones inspired powerpop blasts through the airwaves with so much joy.

Death Valley Girls, 'Hypnagogia'

The opening track to the new DVG record was a psych tinged delight, building vocals and instrumentals until it explodes into a cacophony of sounds to get lost in.

Superchunk, 'There's A Ghost'

Always a delight to hear new Superchunk, and this song, released in time for Halloween, was a great entry into the catalogue of one of the strongest and long lasting bands of the last few decades. Power pop at its finest.

Sløtface, 'Telepathetic'

Scandinavian punk pop has been revitalised recently with these guys and Pom Poko, this is bouncy fun, perfect to get you through another lockdown!

Glad you're enjoying my list! (I'm liking a lot of leestu's stuff, too).

I can't post the ones that just missed my Top 50, because as of today, I'm only up to #87 in my Top 100 countdown. But here are the ones that just missed my Top 100:

Silverstein feat. Princess Nokia, Madness

Pretenders, The Buzz

Smith & Myers, One More Time

Breaking Benjamin feat. Scooter Ward, Far Away

Happy 60th birthday Jet Li! (4/26/23)

I haven't had a chance to listen to any of these yet but I already know a hanful of them. Of those Telepathetic is the one I like the most. Sløtface have consitently been releasing catchy earworms with some cool lyrics for a few years now and Telepathetic is another one.
Also loved seeing Kvelertak followed by Mistki  Gotta respect music taste that divergent.

Post Call Me Maybe, she switched her sound up pretty significantly and became a legit cult sensation in the not quite as mainstream pop world. It's been a fascinating trajectory to watch and while I'm not quite as crazy about her string of 80's-inspired dance pop efforts on the whole as most music nerds, she's usually good for a handful of excellent tunes on each record.
