Chien: Just no.

Geezer: Raw, emotional honesty from Laura dragged down by subpar instrumentation.

John: Effective piece of straightforward, old school Americana storytelling. Enjoyed it.

Leestu: Kevin Parker at his finest. If I was to ever indulge in psychedelic drugs, this would be the soundtrack.

NSpan: Sort of dull, sort of decent. Believe that what's the kid's call a mixed bag.

Ron: As I said this the other day, this was a terrific that is some of the best stuff I've heard from Radiohead.

Screen: Never understood the hype around this song. The "ooh, aw" backing vocals are exceptionally grating.

Shryke: Probably Audioslave's best song. Cornell's vocals really shine here.

Six: Pretty underrated track. The vibrant atmosphere fits Regine's vocals really well.

Surfer: Haven't heard this in ages, but it's a delight. Jack White sounds so at home singing over fast acoustic guitars and crashing cymbals.

Six - Sprawl II - This was outstanding. A truly worthy penultimate song for your list. 8.5/10

Geezer - Black Me Out - Great song. Thoroughly enjoyed it, as I have many of your Against Me songs. I can see why they're your favorite band. 8/100

Leestu - Let It Happen - Like this a lot. The guitars sound very Peter Hook-y, which is always a good thing. Like the ethereal vocals as well. 7.5/10

NSpan - I'll Fight - Is it just me, or does he sound a LOT like George Harrison? Not a knock at all, but damn, I miss George. Nice song. 7/10

JohnErle - Speed Trap Town - Thanks for the story, JE. I can see why this song resonates so strongly with you. Excellently written. 7/10

Tranny - In Keeping Secrets - Not a fan of C&C, but this was okay. 6.5/10

Screen - Hideaway - It was okay. Like the "shot in one take" video. 6/10

Ron B - Pyramid Song - Same as last time. Works in part for me, but not something I would have on repeat. 6/10

Surfer - Hotel Yorba - I can take or leave most White Stripes songs. I'm leaving this one. 5.5/10

Chien - One Final French Thing (Or Possibly Not...) - The music is unremarkable, and his voice just doesn't do it for me. 5/10
Happy 60th birthday Jet Li! (4/26/23)

Geezer, Off With Their Heads, Clear The Air
I like the flow of this. A bit too heavy on the voice sometimes, but I like it.

John, The Decemberists - The Mariner's Revenge Song
Ooooh, some accordion to open it. As a French accordion is part of my DNA so it starts well. I like the rhythm of it, I don't understand it all, but I lilke how it really sounds like a story told. And it's rich and articulate musically. Very good song.

Leestu, The Drones, Shark Fin Blues
Not bad. Nothing that really catches me on first listen. A little too much on the voice sometimes, but music is rather good.

NSpan, The Uncluded, Delicate Cycle
There's something fun in it. Not a fan of his voice though.

Ron, Tool, The Pot
It's better than the other Tool song I had heard and really didn't like.

Screen, Calvin Harris feat, Florence Welsh, Sweet Nothing
A bit too dance club for me.

Shryke, Leona Lewis, Run
I love Snow Patrol's original song. I'm afraid it's much better than this version which doesn't add anything, everything in the voice, it feels like a Mariah Carey song now, and now the music is pushed back in the cellar.

Six, PJ Harvey, On Battleship Hill
Never really falen for PJ Harvey. I usually like her songs, but I never had a crush on any. But I have to admit this is really interesting, I like it.

Surfer, Arcade Fire, Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels)
I've had a couple of Arcade Fire songs on my list, so obviously I love the. And this one is a really good song of theirs, great choice.

Tranny, Between the Buried and Me, Disease, Injury, Madness (2009)
Well, I wasn't really into this.

Geezer, The Gaslight Anthem, The '59 Sound
Pleasant, but nothing surprising.

John, Sparks, Suburban Homeboy
Pretty fun and original indeed.

Leestu, Green Day, Jesus Of Suburbia
Still not really fan of Green Day type of rock.

NSpan, Got a Girl, Did We Live Too Fast
I like the voice of Winstead. And there's an undeniable atmosphere in this song. Pretty good.

Ron, DJ Shadow feat. Run the Jewels, Nobody Speak
I like that. God rhythm, nice use of instruments and sounds. Cool song.

Screen, Disclosure feat. Sam Smith, Latch
Nothing really grabs my attention. Too clubby.

Shryke, The Format, The First Single
It's easy on the ear, but nothing that really catches me.

Six, Kendrick Lamar, Alright
It's better that what I've heard from Lamar up until now in this countdown for sure. There's a musical universe in the back I find interesting, and the flow is pleasant.

Surfer, The Strokes, Last Nite
Pretty good song indeed.

Tranny, Mastodon, Iron Tusk
That wasn't hard enough for me, I like my music much heavier than that.

Miossec – Like I said early in the countdown, if you don't listen to much reggae it all sounds the same, and if you don't listen to much punk it all sounds the same, etc., etc. I don't listen to many French ballads, so they all sound the same to me.

The '59 Sound – I'm not hearing much Springsteen in this, just a lot of Geezer. It's a tad formulaic, but the production is pretty nice, so I'll give it a chance to grow on me. ADDED.

Jesus Of Suburban Homeboys – Classic.

Got A Girl – Sounds suspiciously like Caro Emerald, who had her breakout four years before this. It's okay musically, but I still say Mary Elizabeth Whitebread barely qualifies as a singer.

DJ Shadow – I made it all the way through, which is better than most hip-hop. I liked the 60s style riffs, especially the one that sounds right out of Psychotic Reaction, and even though the braggadocio of hip-hop usually bores me, this sounded tongue-in-cheek enough that I could enjoy it. ADDED.

Disclosure – I liked this way more than a lot of your picks, but it's still not quite for me.

The Format – This is a nice little palate cleanser after two overly syrupy ballads from you. It's a catchy little summery tune like the best of Third Eye Blind.

Kendrick Lamar – Does absolutely nothing for me, except make me reach for the skip button when I've had my fill of the n-word for the day.

The Strokes – I remain, as always, steadfastly indifferent to The Strokes. Can we at least agree that haircut is ridiculous?

Mastodon – The vocals were shouty but not demony, the production felt a little more dynamic, and this is much closer to the kind of metal I liked as a kid. I came awfully close to enjoying this, so... ADDED.

#2

Benjamin Biolay – The French have contributed so much to world culture, but when it comes to pop music the rest of the world just shrugs and says “Oh well, at least their food is good.”

Black Me Out – As I've said, I listened to this album at the time and nothing really grabbed me. This and White Crosses never lived up to New Wave for me, so they both felt like disappointments. Listening to it now it's pretty good, but nothing that blows me away.

Tame Impala – I liked it more than most Tame Impala, which means I lasted 3 minutes instead of the usual 30 seconds. To me, that production effect you raved about just sounds like a dance music cliche taken to an extreme most people never take it. And the first few seconds of this immediately following Jason Isbell are a textbook example of the beauty of dynamics versus the horror of compression.

Wilco – I loved Wilco in the 90s, but I'd written them off as yacht rock by the time this album came out. Now that I have no emotional investment in this era of Wilco, I can hear enough of their early sound in this to make it a pleasant listen, and maybe even worth revisiting. I'm glad it's something special for you and your roommate. ADDED.

Radiohead – Still decent background music if I'm in the right mood for it, but nothing I'd ever seek out. My problem with Radiohead is right there in their name. They over-intellectualize everything, while I prefer music that comes from the Radioheart or the Radiogut.

Kiesza – I didn't mind hearing it once, but I'll never listen to it again.

Audioslave – Better than most Audioslave, which means it almost rises to the level of off-brand Soundgarden,

Arcade Fire – One of the better tracks on Arcade Fire's last great album.

Hotel Yorba – Classic. I'm glad we can agree on music occasionally.

Coheed & Cambria – There's an awful lot of Rush in this, so I liked it more than the majority of your picks. There's still something missing that pushes it over the edge and makes me want to revisit it.

Geezer, Against Me!, Black Me Out
It's definitely a Geezer song, rather pleasant, good vibes, guitar and drums. Nothing spectacular for me, nothing I'll remember, but I can believe it's good live.

John, Jason Isbell, Speed Trap Town
I like the voice, I like the guitar, and I like what you're saying of the lyrics. It's a simple but very nice song.

Leestu, Tame Impala, Let It Happen
That's quite a surprise. I know they're Australian so it makes a close connection with you, but I woudn't have guessed that song would be your #2. But it's a very effective song, with a terrific grove indeed, I considered it for my list too, so it's a good choice.

NSpan, Wilco, I'll Fight
A very personal song, then. I didn't really know Wilco before the countdown, but what I've heard from them convinced me.

Ron, Radiohead, Pyramid Song
As I've said before, a soft yet ample song by Radiohead, very good song.

Screen, Kieza, Hideaway
I'm afraid once again this is definitely not a song for me, way too much club music for me.

Shryke, Audioslave, I Am the Highway
The voice is alright, but I don't find it that striking. The song is okay too, but nothing that will stuck with me.

Six, The Arcade Fire, Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)
Very cool song by Arcade Fire, I really like it.

Surfer, The White Stripes, Hotel Yorba
Another cool and very enjoyable song.

Tranny, Coheed and Cambria, In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3
Much more listenable than most of your songs for me. Much more accessible for profane ears. I'm not saying I like it, that's a far fetch, but I could listen to it easily. Well, it was too long, but I listened to it.

I'm going to ask the group for a little help here. You guys have said countless times how my songs sound like each other. That they follow a formula. That they are very "Geezer." Can you identify, specifically, the elements of my musical choices that make my songs identifiable in that way? Getting it down to exact traits will help me in my #1 write up. Thanks!

I meant like, actually write out a list, in your own words, but thanks anyway six. That song was pretty good. Better than 95% of your list.

Mid-paced punk songs with pop undertones that are designed to be yelled along to with a large crowd of people that are into (insert artist).
