More surprises from #41

Chien: I prefer Elbow when they have a bit of stomp to their music, but this overplayed song is still pretty good.
Geez: When pop-punk takes away the shouting and fast pace it sounds remarkably like manufactured pop.
John: Is this cheating? If a lost Jimi Hendrix song emerged in 2001 would it be eligible? These things dfinitely do not keep me up at night. This was okay country (folk? Americana?) musically but won't stick with me.
Leetsu: I guess Sunbathing Animals is my least favourite album, only because the others are so great. This happens to be my favourite from the record too, so great pick!
NSpan: Enjoyed the funk on this one.
Ron B: Surprising pick. I actually gave up on TVotR on the album before this, which just did nothing for me. This isn't bad, but not even close to the stuff on Return to Cookie Mountain (see John's pick). Oh look, what's Karen Gillen doing in the video?
Screen: It was okay pop. Liked its pace
Shryke: Like their other songs, not bad to listen to but nothing memorable here.
Surf: Another pleasant surprise. This is a great song. Took me a while to embrace their cowpunk third album but now I think it's my favourite, and this is one of the highlights for sure.
Tranny: I usually like your hip=hop picks, but this was a little underwhelming.

The Awesome

TV On the Radio, Happy Idiot - I love this album and this is one of the highlights

Kanye West, Black Skinhead - powerful song

The Great

Flume feat. Tove Lo, Say It - Flume is one of the best producers out there atm...always catchy, but always interesting as well, very rarely makes the same sort of sounding song twice (Disclosure take note)

The Very Good

Bright Light Social Hour, Back & Forth - first listen...like their last song very '70s retro song but that doesn't bother me when it sounds this good...I should get around to listening to this album

Iceage, Forever - I feel like I say this a lot, but there's a few songs from this album I prefer over this (Glassy Eyed..., the title track, and Against The Moon) but I love seeing what people's favourites are and how they differ...it was interesting to hear the left turn they took with this album, and then again with their next, Beyondless, y favourite of theirs

Jimmy Eat World, 23 first listen...surprisingly for a pop punk power ballad (which normally don't work) this was really good

The Good

Elbow, One Day Like This - first listen...the sort of song that might grow on me if I hear it more or it might start to annoy me, could go either way...for now it's a good first listen

The Meh

Pet Shop Boys, The Way It Used to Be - first listen...this is not from Very, for some reason I own that album and it's probably the album that made me give up on them (although admittedly the singles from it were okay)...after listening to this song I'm still happy with that decision

The Rest

Young Thug and Travis Scott feat. Quavo, Pick Up the Phone - I've heard this song so much so I'm well aware of how it manages to be both catchy and annoying at the same time...much like Migos, not like Young Thug though, he's just annoying

Big Country, Soldier Of The Lord - first listen...one for the fans only?

Round 41 thoughts

Chien, Elbow - Think I mentioned earlier I am not exactly a fan of the band, but the strings in this song are quite nice.

Geezer, Jimmy Eat World - Again, I just don't really like this band when they sanitised their sound with over production, and their slower songs highlight this only further.

JohnErle, Big Country - It's Big Country, so obviously there is a level of quality here no matter. But it does sound like a huge step down from their peak material I am familiar with.

Leestu, Parquet Courts - Definitely find the band here where their VU influence is most evident, would fit in perfectly on White Light White Heat. And also my favourite song from the record, love all the fuzz and noise.

Nspan, Bright Light Social Hour - I know the band name, not sure if it is because you have posted something by them before, and it was fun, really cool funky vibe to it all.

Ron, TV On The Radio - This has a great beat to it, almost a dance pace, and it definitely showed they still had plenty to offer (although their output has pretty much evaporated since). However, my go to records for the band are still Cookie Mountain and Dear Science, two fantastic records in completely different styles, so unfortunately I don't find myself listening to this too often. Thanks for reminding me of their quality.

Screen, Flume - To my uninitiated ears couldn't really differentiate between this and most other pop music, and didn't really appeal.

Shryke, Pet Shop Boys - My dad was a huge PSB fan when I was a kid, I recall listening to Actually on repeat on our tape player and so have always had a little of nostalgic fondness for them. This song reminded me of some of their best stuff, it had a slightly sombre sound, while the parts of it reminded me of Its A Sin. Surprisingly, enjoyed this quite a lot.

Six, Kanye West - I keep thinking I don't like his music, and then you guys post a song by him that just knocks that idea out of the park. Not sure I knew this was him, but this really packs a punch.

Tranny, Young Thug and Travis Scott - Yeah, not for me at all.

#41 – To save time, I'll stick to the stuff I want to revisit.

Parquet Courts – That was a nice blast of old-school punk/new wave energy. And they had enough sense to walk away after three minutes, which is as long as a song like this should ever be. ADDED.

Bright Light Social Hour – I keep going back and forth on this track. Maybe, maybe not. ADDED... for now.

Can I make a suggestion for future rounds?

Maybe it would be better to have a separate thread for each round instead of lumping 10 rounds into one thread.

I'm one of the "lucky" few who still has to show up at work, so it's hard to keep up, and it would be easier to find the videos and original comments if they were always at the beginning of a thread instead of buried halfway down who knows what page. Not all songs are available on Spotify in Australia, so I know I've missed a few by not having the original videos handy.

My bad. It's from Yes, not Very. Both are great albums.

Chien - One Day Like This - Really good song. The singer sounds like a cross between Peter Gabriel and Jakob Dylan, which is cool. 7/10

Geezer - 23 - I don't mind slow and meandering either if it's a good song. This is a good song. 7/10

NSpan - Back & Forth - Very very okay. 5.5/10

Leestu - Black and White - Just meh for me. 5/10

John Erle - Soldier of the Lord - No, nuh uh, no way. I hate most country music, and I loathe gospel or whatever form PraiseJeebus music takes. Combine the two... ouch. 3/10

Will do the rest later.

Actually, Shryke, Soldier Of The Lord is pretty much the opposite of Gospel. It's a song about how people can use religion to justify violence. It's a chilling look into the mind of a terrorist.

#41 cont.

Ron B - Happy Idiot - I love that they got frickin' Paul Reubens for this video! The song itself is also pretty gnarly. Great choice. 7.5/10

Six - Black Skinhead - Cutting and pasting from Tranny's instance of this song on this thread... I typically hate Kanye, but this wasn't bad. 6/10

Surfer - Forever - Good song. The opening riff was very Nirvana-esque, and then the vocals cut in. Dude sounds like Jim Morrison. 6/10

Tranny - Pick Up the Phone - Not bad, but not something I'll revisit. 5.5/10

Screen - Say It - Not my thing at all. 4.5/10

Like It
Eddy de Pretto, Kid (2017) (one of the very few French language songs you've posted I thought was pretty good)
Shearwater, You As You Were (2012)
Dandy Warhols, We Used to be Friends (2003)

Love It

Meh
Car Seat Headrest, Beach Life-In-Death (2011)
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Can’t Stop (2003)

Mitski, Townie (2014)

Loathe It
Tinashe, Party Favors (2016)
Perfume Genius, Grid (2014) (that was really hard to even get through 30 seconds)
After the Burial, Drifts (2008) (Its not the satan I mind, its the inaudible lyrics)
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man. - The Dude
