Random Praise/Snark:

It's Ok – That was lovely. ADDED

Summer Romance. I dug it. ADDED

SZA – I fully expected to hate this, but kinda liked it. Nice 80s/Santigold vibe. ADDED

Sad Song – I prefer the Hooverphonic song of the same name, but I didn't mind this, even if it seemed very familiar somehow. ADDED.

Grimes – I kinda liked the Vangelis synths, but wasn't crazy about the voice, and I'd need a lyric sheet to figure out what she's saying. Maybe.

Run The Jewels – Needs more Vangelis, less rap.

Protomartyr – Very alternative 80s. Not sure it adds much to its influences, but it might grow on me. ADDED... for now.

Ode To L.A. - There's a fine line between homage and theft. This song has one foot firmly planted on either side of that line. I liked Dead Sound, though.

Menzingers – That intro was way too close to I Wanna Be Sedated

Instant Crush – I'm amazed they didn't get sued by the Alan Parsons Project

Mother – I'm guessing the similarity to Monty Python's Four Yorkshiremen sketch was unintentional. “My mother worked 22 hours a day AND paid millowner for permission to come to work!”

A Perfect Circle/Audioslave/Spinal Taproot – This kind of slick, over-produced, corporate-approved, pseudo-edgy modern rock bores me to tears.

Oxygen – I tried a couple times but always gave up after the first minute. One riff repeated ad nauseam doesn't do it for me. Especially that riff.

Fuck Buttons – Nice rhythm. It's a shame they forgot to write a song to go with it.

Lose Your Soul – This is a perfect example of why I prefer to judge music on its own merits while knowing as little as possible about who made it. I thought it was kinda interesting the first time through, but when I learned it was Ryan Gosling's band I had a hard time taking it seriously.

Keane – Someone should tell these guys there are 88 keys on a piano. They only ever use 4 of them.

I don't have the intestinal fortitude to tackle Nickleback right now, so round 51 will have to wait.

Screen finally sent his #51.

Please add it to the above list, Tranny.

Lorde, Yellow Flicker Beat (2014)

As a contribution to the soundtrack for Mockingjay Part 1, this was a great lead off song (even though I don't remember it being used in the movie itself - and I would know, considering it was pretty much a requirement for those who grew up in my era to see every Hunger Games movie at least twice - even the teachers loved it, because it encouraged reading and helped with Literature in exploring dystopian/gladiatorial fiction. Maybe the credits?) Divorcing this from the Hunger Games soundtrack, it's a great song on its own, with a creepy melody to fit it's dark lyrics. Best of Lorde's career, IMO.

Happy 60th birthday Jet Li! (4/26/23)

Mega-post review:

Love Pumped Up Kicks. Never been a fan of Gorillaz, and both of the songs featured didn't do anything to change that. Done by Camp Cope was great - will have to look into them more. Liked Volver, even though I couldn't understand the lyrics, and it wasn't the Volver from the Almodovar film.
It's not destroying. It's making something new.
