Quarterfinal #3

1. Detroit Youth Choir (choir, Terry's GB) - I think they are clearly behind the other choir this year. Just not unique enough for me. But it was decent.

2. Lukas & Falco (dog act) - You nailed it. I honestly didn't even watch it, I knew what they were going to do. We've seen it.

3. Dom Chambers (magician) - THAT WAS AMAZING. Yes I played along, yes it worked! I love this guy.

4. Benicio Bryant (child singer) - I liked him the first two times, but yeah, I didn't really like this song at all and it didn't do a great job of showing off his vocal talent. I'd like to give him one more shot to bounce back, though.

5. Gonzo (dancer/tambourinist) - Yeah, I get they ALWAYS put something dumb into the live shows for the variety of it, sometimes it works and other times, well, its this.

6. Marcin Patrzalek (guitarist) - I wasn't as blown away as his prior auditions because I didn't recognize what he was playing. But I LOVE him and think he might be more talented than anyone in the field.

7. Eric Chien (magician) - He is in Shin Lim's class for sure, I just hate how similar they are. I don't want an almost identical act to win two years going. Maybe that's just me. I think they'd be great in a show together, that could fill arenas.

8. Berywam (beatboxing group) - Yeah this is another act that leaves me asking "how did they get here?" Did nothing for me.

9. Matthew Richardson (aerialist) - Agreed. He's got to be a part of a larger show. Just not enough by himself.

10. MacKenzie (singer) - It's really daring to do Bowie, especially that song. I give him credit for going for it, but it wasn't up to Bowie, obviously, so it fell kinda flat with me. Simon nailed it, as he usually does.

11. Jackie Fabulous (comedian) - Yup, she's the bst comedian on this season, for sure. Loved it. She's a pro.

12. Emanne Beasha (child opera singer, Jay Leno's GB) - She reminds me so much of Jackie it's scary. Her voice has no flaws. I don't think opera will ever win this show (how Jackie lost to Michael Grimm I'll still never get, but that just proves that it will probably never be enough). She's a lock for the top 10 though. Quite possibly as high as the top 3.

Top five acts go through.

1. Ndlovu Youth Choir (choir) - I think they are heads and shoulders ahead of Detroit Youth Choir. They are absolutely amazing. Fun, fantastic, I would love to see them. So glad to see them succeed.

2. Ansley Burns (child singer) - I think no matter how well she did, her crazy journey was going to end here. She was just ok. It sure was a fun ride while it lasted though. I'm happy she made it this far.

3. Messoudi Brothers (acrobatic trio) - I think they had at least 3 wow moments! Holy cow that was amazing. I don't think they are quite enough on their own to fill a full show, however. They'd be an awesome part of a bigger show.

4. Tyler Butler-Figueroa (child violinist) - I see what you are saying, but I also think its a bit harsh. I think he's an amazing violinist. I think he's a better violinist than Kodi Lee is a singer, if we're going there. I think he's great and he just makes you happy to watch.

5. Greg Morton (comic impressionist) - YES! He got back to sticking to a theme, not just jumping all over the place and I loved it. I couldn't disagree with Simon more. this made far more sense than his last two performances. This is as far as he goes in this competition, but he's super talented and he's been very fun to watch. I think he'll definitely get work.

6. Kodi Lee (singer/pianist) - Ok, this was his BEST performance yet. He's such a great story, and just talented enough to win. He's been in the driver's seat from episode one. He doesn't look like he's ready to give it up.

7. Jackie Fabulous (comedienne) - I thought it was funny, but it's going to be tough for her to squeak by again against tougher competition. I think this is as far as she goes, but she'll make a living telling jokes.

8. Robert Finley (singer) - I think he's my favorite og the season. It's him or Luke Islam. He may not be the most talented or biggest star, but damn do I love watching him play. You said it: authentic. I am really hoping we get to see him again.

9. Eric Chien (magician) - Maybe he just doesn't have big in his bag? Shin Lim was able to go big when he filled the stage with cards. Eric might just be a little too green at this stage. I still think he'd make a very fine apprentice. Also, is it just me, or did the reveal get screwed upon tv? The camera just panned down and all the figures were there... like why weren't they on a wider shot? It confused the hell out of me.

10. Light Balance Kids (light-up dance group) - I think Disney's gonna sue somebody! But besides that, they were absolutely fantastic!!!! They were better than ever. They have to get to the final, and if there's any justice in the world, they will be in the top 5.

11. Benicio Bryant (child singer) - I think he's right on the cusp of the top 5 here tonight. Could definitely see him moving on, but could also just see him missing out. You're right, the placement helps.

Same top 5 as you, except Tyler over Benicio, but I could see it going either way.

So Benicio, Tyler, and Kodi make it through on votes.

Light Balance Kids get the Instant Save.

And Ndlovu gets the Judges' Choice over Robert Finley. Sucks for Robert, but it was the right choice.

Aaaaand... Lukas and Falco are back next week as the WC. Sigh.

I have to believe that in next week's field, V Unbeatable and Emanne Beasha are shoe-ins unless they royally screw the pooch. Luke Islam and Detroit Youth Choir could get in if they nail their performances. I hope the fifth goes to Dom Chambers, if only to have one magician in the finals. But then, I'd also like to see Ryan Niemiller in the finals as the only comedian...

As for the rest, I don't think they have a chance. Voices of Service is the only one I wouldn't mind seeing go through, but with so many great singers ahead of them, I doubt it will happen.

V Unbeatable - They are mind-blowingly good. The best dance group ever in the history of the show. Period. They could win.

Dom Chambers - He's awesome. Funny, edgy, interesting and a GREAT magician. That was amazing. I really hope he makes the finals.

Luke Islam - I genuinely think he's the best singer in this competition. He's a freaking star. I get chills every single time he sings. He HAS to be a finalist.

Lukas and Falco - Why? Just why? Of ALL the great acts we had to say goodbye to, did THIS get the wild card spot? This is absolutely unworthy of the semi-final stage. I'd have X'd them like the dog himself did.

Chris Klafford - I think he's a good singer, good song writer, overall good guy with talent. I hope he has a long successful career. I just think this journey probably ends here for him, but that's an accomplishment in and of itself. As far as the whole original/cover debate, I say it didn't really matter. In this field, he was always a big longshot.

Detroit Youth Choir - I can't help but compare them to Ndlovu and I just don't think they are quite as good. They are good, but I don't think its a million dollar act. Good for them though, I bet they have a shot to get the votes to get there.

Alex Dowis - WOW. Just beautiful, powerful, perfection. I can't even believe how cool this act is. He is brilliant. One of my favorite acts ever, and this may have been his best performance yet. Unlike anything else in this show, I hope he takes one of the 10 finals spots. Incredible.

Marcin Patrzalek - Absolutely brilliant talent, but I think because he is just a brilliant guitarist, as with others who are just brilliant aerialists or contortionists or specialists of other kinds, I am not sure it is enough to get him to the finals, but it won't be for lack of talent, that's for sure. I'm still rooting for him.

Emanne Beasha - She's 10. T-E-N. Its absolutely unfathomable. She's in for sure. Only question now is whether or not she can break the opera singer curse andwin the whole damn thing.

Ryan Niemiller - I love love love that he didn't just do jokes about his condition. It wasn't his best set, but it proved he has versatility. I don't think he'll quite get there tonight because the night is loaded, but he's good.

Voices of Service - Any other night, I think they'd be a lock. Tonight I'm not sure. They are absolutely in the mix. I honestly have no idea how this is going to shake out. I'll just list who I HOPE gets through...

V Unbeatable
Dom Chambers
Luke Islam
Alex Dowis
Emanne Beasha

Very interested in watching tomorrow.

Semifinal #2!

1. V Unbeatable - Totally agree, Geez. They are as good at dancing as Zucaroh was at acrobatics. AND they're awesome at acrobatics! They are SO in synch it's scary. I would love to see them win. They'd better advance.

2. Dom Chambers - We need a magician in the finals. He's earned it. He's honestly been the biggest surprise of the entire season for me. And damn, that was a lot of bee-ah. I can't imagine how bad he needed to pee afterwards...

3. Luke Islam - Isn't it amazing that in the past few years, we've had so many amazing preteen and barely-teen girls (Grace, Darcy, Courtney, and now Emanne), but we've barely had any boys in the same age range get this far? This year, we have Benicio, Tyler, and Luke. I think he should definitely make it into the finals, but his position in the show may hurt him. However, if he lands in the middle, I feel safe that either America or the judges will save him.

4. Lukas and Falco - To answer your question... well, they obviously couldn't bring back a singing act, as the show is already top-heavy with them. I went back to the QF's to see what non-singing act deserved to be brought back. Honestly, there weren't many, as most of the acts cut in that round were either singers or they just weren't that good (looking at you, Gonzo...). Bir Khalsa is about all I could come up with. They wouldn't have advanced, but they would have been more entertaining than this. (And, for the record, I LOVE border collies. We owned one for 13 years.)

5. Chris Klafford - In this season with so many powerhouse kid singers, Chris just doesn't have the same appeal. He's got a great voice, like a modern-age Dan Fogelberg, and I hope this show gives him the platform he needs to build a great career on. But I agree, this should be it for him.

6. Detroit Youth Choir - LOVED the prepackage. They're not in my Top 3, but they are definitely in the mix. They killed it this week. Queen Latifah was spot-on with her critique. I can't help but wonder, if it comes down to a Judges' Choice, will they go through since there's already a choir in the finals? Would they get the nod over Ryan or Dom? I have to wonder.

7. Alex Dowis - I have to agree with you. Gorgeous. I love artists that tell a story without the use of gadgetry or a light show (though that's often cool too). I think back to how much we loved The Silhouettes in their year, and that sand artist that made the Top 10 a few years before that (forget his name). He's different enough to be unique, but his brand of genius is so... quiet? That's the one thing that might keep him out of the finals, IMHO.

8. Marcin Petrzalek - I don't think any instrumental guitarist has ever gotten this far. In fact, I'm sure of it. Many musicians can entertain without having to sing (Joe Satriani, for one), but it's a hard sell for a lot of voters. He's got tons of raw talent, but given how he squeaked into this round, it won't be enough.

9. Emanne Beasha - You asked how Michael Grimm beat Jackie Evancho back in Season 5? Simple. Jackie didn't NEED to win. Her future was made the second she made the finals. She didn't need a Vegas show. I knew from that moment that she would become a superstar that would sing for kings and queens and presidents and popes. And I was right. Emanne has the same talent, and is the same age Jackie was back then. She's going to have a mega-career well beyond the Vegas Strip. She'll make the finals, but I hope she doesn't win (for this reason). Acts like V Unbeatable need it far more.

10. Ryan Niemiller - Comedy is such a hard sell on this show. Either it's funny, or it isn't. Comedians don't get that WOW moment that danger acts or acrobatic acts do. They can't hit the glory notes singers do. They can't do that surprising twist magicians and mentalists do. One of the reasons Tape Face is so memorable is that you never knew what he was going to do. But he would make you laugh without uttering a sound. Stand-up comedy is just words and gestures. No WOW factor. That being said, I love Ryan and I hope he gets work for the next twenty years whether he moves on or not.

11. Voices of Service - Holy shit, what a night. Pretty much everyone brought their A-game. VoS might just have a chance after that performance, aided by the fact that they got the final slot in the show. I love what these four represent, and to put them through would mean a lot in Trump's America.

My top 5:

1. V Unbeatable
2. Dom Chambers
3. Luke Islam
4. Emanne Beasha

5. A complete and utter toss-up. I'd be happy with Ryan, the DYC, Alex Dowis, or VoS. Pretty much anyone (except Lukas an Falco) could take this spot and I wouldn't be overly upset.

Pretty sure we're at the stage where talent alone can't get you to the finals. Very disappointed in tonight's results.

Finals! Here we go:

V Unbeatable - I can't stop saying it, if they don't win the whole thing, what hope is there for ANY dance crew to win this show? The best there has ever been, and likely the best there will ever be. And tonight was their best performance yet. I hope they find massive success, wherever it is.

Detroit Youth Choir - This was definitely my favorite performance of theirs. I got chills. I don't think they have a chance at winning in this field, but its a great story, and they have everything to be proud of. I hope they have had the time of their lives, and I hope they tour the world.

Emanne Beasha - Big mistake, at least in my opinion, not picking a more recognizable song. I've never heard this song in my life before tonight. She's got an incredible voice, but we've never seen opera win before, and I doubt we will this season.

Ryan Niemiller - Still funny, but again, not his best stuff. That's usually the case for comedians, which is why it makes it so hard for them to win the show. They can't really save their best stuff for last, or repeat material. Its not a great format for comedians, but he's going to get plenty of work for a very long time. AGT launches another career.

Voices of Service - Wow... that prepackage. How could that not get to you? And they come strong with a winning performance. I now think they've got a shot to win the whole damn thing, and I didn't think they'd even be top 5 going into tonight.

Light Balance Kids - AMAZING! They just never have an off night. I'd pay to see them in a heartbeat. It was wonderful. They'll almost definitely finish 3rd, but I hope they join their parents on a huge international tour and sell out arenas.

Benicio Bryant - I just don't think his voice is that strong. I mean next to Emanne its no contest. I don't think he even belongs in the class of Luke Islam who isn't even here tonight. I liked it, but I think the judges overstated his chances of winning. And that doesn't even bring up The Favorite...

Tyler Butler Figuerroa - Loved the pre-package, loved the song choice, loved the performance, love the kid. He's amazing. He has a shot at the top 5, but I don't think an act on this show that is just a boy and a violin can win, no matter how great a story it is. I mean, Brian King Joseph didn't win, and he was obviously better overall than Tyler.

Kodi Lee - Simon began the show by saying that this was the most wide open finals they have ever had. I'm here to call absolute and complete utter bullshit on that. This thing is OVER, and really, it was before the show ever started. No one else needed to show up tonight. He is going to win by a wider margin (not that we ever know the margins) than the show has ever seen. And you know what, he deserves it. This performance was far and away his best, showcasing his angelic voice in a way that no other song he's sang has. I have been the slightest bit skeptical of his raw talent before tonight, thinking he'd win, but more based on his personality and story and overcoming the odds than his pure talent. This changed that completely. It was spectacular. So so special. Even without a single disability attached, that was a million dollar performance, and he did it overcoming every hardship. He deserves this, 100%, and he's going to win it.

Ndlovu Youth Choir - And to close the show like that, what a night. That was absolutely amazing. I could watch them over and over again. How can you watch them and not smile? That was perfect. I hope they find so much success. What a wonderful final performance.

I can't say it was the best final ever, I actually think it was relatively top-heavy. If I had to rank them, it would go like this:

1. Kodi Lee
2. Light Balance Kids
3. V Unbeatable
4. Ndlovu Youth Choir
5. Voices of Service
6. Tyler Butler Figuerroa
7. Emanne Beasha
8. Detroit Youth Choir
9. Benicio Bryant
10. Ryan Niemiller

For the record, Geez, an opera singer DID win AGT once before. Neal E. Boyd won Season 3 (eleven years ago). He went on to moderate success after that. Paul Potts won BGT not long after that.

Ah, before my time, sorry for the mistake. Anything before the Howie Mandel era. Seems like the show was a lot different then as well. I think its impossible a Michael Grimm or Landau Eugene Murphy could ever win today either.

Not to mention Bianca Ryan (I mean, she's GOOD, but not by today's standards). Michael Grimm was quite good. I thought he was much better than that chicken farmer/country singer who won Season 4. Kevin Skinner was his name, I think.

Terry Fator is probably the only winner from the first 5 seasons that would stand a chance now.

I'm rather glad that, after five years of adult male singers winning, Season 7 is when the show got good and separated itself from American Idol as a showcase for all kinds of talent.

Olate Dogs won because there had never been a great dog act before. Every dog act since then has just been compared to then. Kenichi was unique enough to win his season. Then came Mat Franco and Paul Zerdin.

Grace Vanderwaal broke the decade-long drought for both female artists AND kids, followed by Darcy Lynn.

Last year, of course, Shin Lim proved magic can win.

I so hope V Unbeatable will win this time.

FINALS!!

1. V Unbeatable - Have to agree. Best performance yet. If they don't win, I weep for any dance crew that may follow. I love that they never strayed from their roots, always dancing to Hindi music and not trying to "Americanize" themselves by choosing a local pop songs. They have all my votes tonight.

2. Detroit Youth Choir - I can't recall if a choir has ever made the Finals. And now we have TWO! I don't even look at it like American black kids vs. African black kids. They're both awesome, and I KNOW they're having the time of their lives. They made a statement, and that's sometimes better than winning.

3. Emanne Beasha - I love uber-talented kid singers, especially girls. Two weeks ago, I would have called Emanne a front-runner, but now, I don't think she's Top 5. Jackie at least sang familiar songs way back when, even if they weren't in English. I have little doubt Emanne has a brilliant international career ahead of her, as there will ALWAYS be an audience for this. Tonight, though, I would have gone with Ave Maria.

4. Ryan Niemiller - Loved the prepackage. Comedians who make it this far have gone on to great careers, and Ryan will too. He's a good guy, and I wish him the best.

5. Voices of Service - Jeez. that prepackage made me cry. They aim right for the heart, have since the beginning. In this show where seven of the ten acts either ARE children or at least incorporate children, it's good to have someone like VoS, who have LITERALLY been through the trenches. Loved them.

6. Light Balance Kids - I can't even imagine the hours of practice this takes. I'm betting they put in as much time to perfecting this as V Unbeatable, especially when you factor in the technical aspect. I hope some talent scout in Vegas gives them a great bit stage to perform on, along with their parents. This is a Vegas show that would pack them in for years. Talk about fast food! (Sorry, that joke wrote itself.)

7. Benecio Bryant - He's a good kid, and if he keeps his head on straight, he'll go far in life. But he's not there yet. He's the weakest of the vocal acts in the Finals. Despite the judges' overpraise, I would say he has the least chance to win.

8, Tyler Butler-Figueroa - Another good kid, but he's so soft-spoken that it's a little tough to connect with him. Yes, he lets his violin speak for him, and again, he should go far in life if his cancer remains in remission (and even then). But he won't win.

9. Kodi Lee -   Wow. Just...wow. Yeah. I said he would win after his first audition, and I'm going to stick to that (though I still hope V Unbeatable wins). This kid is magic. (mike drop)

10. Ndlovu Youth Choir - What a way to end it! One of my favorite songs of all time, and they put their own spin on it. How can you not love everything about this group!! Honestly, they may not win, but it doesn't matter. These kids have already won.

My odds to win:

Kodi Lee
V Unbeatable
Ndlovu Youth Choir
Light Balance Kids
Detroit Youth Choir
Voices of Service
Tyler Butler-Figuroa
Emanne Beasha
Ryan Niemiller
Benecio Bryant
