Don't forget that McConaughey's also a Texas boy.

Speaking of which, I'm surprised he didn't take the new Linklater.

It's also the most active the place gets for the entire year. I don't see how prolonging it is such a bad thing. However, that being said, if people were more active in using the trade aspect of drafting, you wouldn't have to wait. I'm surprised there's not more wheeling and dealing. If everyone is so bored, you could be using that time to negotiate and move around the draft. Would make the whole thing even more fun.

I just realized that I missed an excuse to reference Tequila and Bonetti when I was giving a preview for next weekend's movies.

Is "Show Dogs" then the final (anticipated) "Wide" release to be drafted?

Yeah, I figured you were referencing "White Boy Rick" earlier, there, Geez. It looks amazing -- could well be another Oscar nom for McConaughey -- but Studio 8 has struggled out of the gate to put films in theaters. Maybe it can catch fire like "Hostiles" did at the box office... Though that title, from another no-name production company, ought to have been a MUCH bigger film, with acting noms for at least Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike, possibly Wes Studi and/or Rory Cochrane, too, as well as Best Original Screenplay, maybe Best Cinematography, and Best Picture. In my opinion.

I think "Show Dogs" could be a $35M (or higher) earner. Nicely done, especially for such a late Round.

(Does anyone know, offhand, what the highest-grossing last-Round original draft pick has ever been?)

White Boy Rick's actually Sony. Studio 8 is the now-defunct production label of former Warner Bros. head Jeff Robinov.

And I can't see Show Dogs doing that well. Marketing's been scant and when's the last time an Open Road/Global Road release hit $35 million?

As for Hostiles, the mixed word out of Toronto hurt that film. I don't think a major would have squeezed any more money from it.

And to answer your question, Nico, I think it was War Room.

I'd be happy with 35, but if Beverly Hills MF'n Chihuahua can make 90m in 2008, this could have a high ceiling.

There is. I have one on my list. And there are few listed as limited that are set for wide expansions.

And weiss, Beverly Hills Chihuahua was Disney. Show Dogs...is not Disney.

I know there’s like next to no chance that Netflix doesn’t day and date this, but I’m gonna take a chance on the Irishman. Maybe Scorsese has enough power to pull some strings and get Netflix to release it in theaters.

And since I have nothing left on my list I cheated and checked a league, I’ll take Anna

I think I saw that Netflix is releasing The Irishman early next year. Though they have promised Scorsese that it will play theatrically, I'm not sure if they'll report (most theatrical deals with aren't as favorable as the one they have with the Duplass Brothers, where those titles go out with The Orchard theatrically and do report).

I don't know about EVER, but Geezer picked Strangers: Prey at Night in the 16th round last year. That did fairly well considering.
Happy 60th birthday Jet Li! (4/26/23)
