2024-25 YEARLONG BOX-OFFICE DRAFT LEAGUE

Post by Chienfantome »

Here we go, boys, it’s that time of the year again ! I will officialize the final results of the 2023-24 draft league when this weekend’s final numbers come in, but the rankings are already set, as this weekend’s results won’t change our standings, so we’re good to go for this new season !

We’ll be 9 players, like last year, UDM coming back (welcome back, buddy), while Boosch won’t be joining us this year. I’d like to seize this moment to thank you, Boosch, for joining us last year when the sky fell upon our heads, as we say here in France, when we heard of Shryke’s passing. It was a very difficult time for us all, but you allowed him to play with us all year long, so again, thank you for that. We still miss our friend and will be thinking about him even more in the next few days.

A bit of a reminder, as usual, once it’s your turn to draft, you’re on the clock for 12 hours to make your pick. If you don’t, the next player can draft ahead of you. I’ll update this first post and add everyone’s picks along the draft as regularly as possible, but when you come here to see if it’s your turn to draft, go take a look at the most recent page, because it may be your turn even if the first post here isn’t updated yet. Also, be sure to draft a film that wasn’t picked yet !! And when you know you won’t be able to be online for a long time, don’t hesitate to send a list to one of us who’ll be able to pick for you if necessary.

There are 12 rounds, 108 films to pick. Welcome to the 2024-25 draft, mes amis. And good luck to you all.

Great to be back, and this time hopefully those blasted unions won't be ruining my slate by asking for decency, fairness, and a shunning of Skynet in the industry.

It's always going to be a shame that Shryke can't join us for the games and the countdowns, but this is a game that will always remind me of him.

Do we have everyone's emails or contact details so we can hound them?

Anyway, given my atrocious result last draft, I'm hoping to at least start with a hit, and that's going to be

Deadpool & Wolverine

Yes, superhero films are in decline (finally) but this crossover between the MCU and the X-Men franchise should deliver at least as much as Guardians of the Galaxy 3 last year. It's one of 2 almost guaranteed $300m movies. So that will give me almost as much as my entire slate last draft.

I had a bad draft last year, too many films moved, and my instincts were bad.
I'm gonna secure a safe option for round 1, and draft Despicable Me 4. It's got July 4 all to itself, and should play well all along July and August. You can never bet against the Minions.

I have everybody's email except for Banks and UDM, but I'm friends with the former on FB and could probably pull the latter's email from the vast archives of my inbox

Well I did my usual 90 seconds of research and have still no idea what's good.
Deadpool and Wolverine should do good business, I kinda wanted that. Despicable Me is safe sure. My head is telling me to go with the big Xmas release in Mufasa but gut is saying go for Joker. So I'll go with my gut and pick

Joker Folie a Deux

Interesting picks. There are 2 films I would have picked over Despicable Me (surely the franchise will start to dop eventually!) and Joker 2 (could be bigger, or could disappoint fans. It's a risk), but sensible picks nonetheless

The worrying part of Deadpool & Wolverine is that it's going up against the Olympics, to the point where it will lose some of opening day on IMAX to the ceremony. But then again, the first entry did have the biggest Valentine's Day opening ever and still does.

The Olympics is over so many days and so many different events that I imagine fans of a particular sport will have plenty of opportunities to watch the film another day.

Hello all! Great to be back! I'm here in the Seattle area so probably one of the last to be up for the day - but I can do some picks late into the night if helpful.
I have no clue what to pick! I stumbled into a decent slate last year thanks to a few films - but my top pick was not one of them. So - what to do? Go with a Sequel that has good buzz I suppose.

Inside Out 2 for me. It's got to make double what The Marvels did for me last year, right?

There's some stuff with more potential, but I'll try to play it safe and take Moana 2, and hope it'll play throughout the holidays.

I'm not so big on Inside Out 2, to be honest. Pixar is in decline right now and when I saw the trailer before Kung Fu Panda 4, there was almost no reaction at all. It got blown out of the water by the trailer for DreamWorks' next film.

Meanwhile, there's another summer animated movie that I think outdoes Inside Out 2.

That's all at the moment from your Mel Kiper without the bad toupee.

For my first pick, I will choose Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

With as little conviction as I can muster, I'll take Mufasa: The Lion King. People are rebelling against Disney live action remakes and they don't like prequels to begin with... but maybe Barry Jenkins can actually make this good.

It's not going to sniff the take of the original live action but so long as it stays on this date, it'll grab families for the holidays. Hopefully this one has a little more soul and a good song or two.

Surprised Mufasa took this long to go. I was weighing that up against Deadpool 3. The last Lion King was massive, and despite Disney's weakening, I still think this will be the family film of Christmas. $300m is a cert.

Moana is a sensible pick. Should do well across Thanksgiving and hold strong. I wonder if $200m is its ceiling, though.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a surprise. A bit of a wild card, given its Sept release date, and being a sequel to what now feels more like a cult film than a blockbuster. The one major factor it was is Jenna Ortega, so the Wednesday fans should flock to this. It could earn anywhere from $100m to 200m. Big risk.
