Re: Tranny Tackles the Cinema: The Films of 5/24

Cinemascores:

Sight: A
Furiosa: B+
The Garfield Movie: B+

What makes the latter two scores interesting is that B+ was also the grade for both Mad Max: Fury Road and the previous two Garfield movies.

Re: The Latest Date Changes 2: The New Batch

The Fire Inside is never coming out, it seems like. It might make more sense to dump it onto Prime at this point.

Re: 2024-25 Yearlong Box Office League Waiver Wire

Snitch was a full-blown serious role. And Ric Roman Waugh's filmography isn't all action vehicles (see Shot Caller). If The Rock going serious didn't take off the first time (there was also Gridiron Gang, Faster, and Empire State), it's not going to work a second time, especially in a role many will...

Re: 2024-25 Yearlong Box Office League Waiver Wire

Dwayne Johnson's been trying to do that for a long time now (remember Snitch?). It's probably more likely A24 tries to make it another one of their attempts at being mainstream and appealing to conservative audiences instead of selling it as an Oscar movie.

Re: 2024-25 Yearlong Box Office League Waiver Wire

I'd expect a spring opening. The Iron Claw didn't get any awards traction and stories featuring opioid addiction tend to be quite niche (yes, we have two themes that are hard sells to mainstream audiences). It would get buried in awards season. In addition, this is one of 23 undated A24 titles. This...

Re: 2024-25 Yearlong Box Office League Waiver Wire

I definitely wasn't expecting a narrative version of this story. But anyway, I'd be surprised if it did well, even with the leads. MMA movies have never taken off at the box office, A24 already covered similar ground with The Iron Claw (the first chapter of A24's 1980's Cinematic Universe), and Dway...

Re: The Latest Date Changes 2: The New Batch

I don't know. I'd expect distributors to be lining up for something like The Toxic Avenger. The audience is built-in, post-theatrical possibilities are solid, and seeing how the Internet pretty much controls the industry now, this is the kind of thing that would get the terminally online talking whe...

Re: The Latest Date Changes 2: The New Batch

Giving how long things have been quiet on a completed film, it makes you wonder if there's some Kung Fury 2/The People's Joker situation with it. Lloyd Kaufman was one of the producers and he has a history of screwing people.

Re: The Latest Date Changes 2: The New Batch

How many years ago was this one shot? It feels like it's been on the shelf since before COVID (edit: it was filmed in 2021).

Meanwhile, I have to imagine The Toxic Avenger will finally get distribution now. It premiered last year and got positive festival response but disappeared after.

Re: Tranny Tackles the Cinema: The Films of 5/24

I think the difference was the Internet. However, the Internet popularity of Garfield is almost entirely ironic.

Re: Tranny Tackles the Cinema: The Films of 5/24

Garfield's getting destroyed by critics, noting how little it has to do with the comic strip. At this point, it's probably going to play less Secret Life of Pets and more Migration. Meanwhile, I have to wonder if Sony's going to regret making a deal with Garfield's animation studio to release future...

Re: 2024 Festivals/Awards Thread

I can't see the awards voting bases being too wowed by a movie about strippers and oligarchs, especially from a director who usually makes arthouse exploitation. But Neon probably won't release it in the summer either due to their massive backlog of undated titles. They still haven't given Soderberg...

Re: 2024 Festivals/Awards Thread

Wasn't that always a title that was going to sell internationally before domestic? As a US distributor, I'm still expecting Netflix to win out is Amazon doesn't take it as a limited release/Prime title (much like Howard's Thirteen Lives was). Hit Man got great reviews at Toronto but AGC was only abl...

Re: The Latest Date Changes 2: The New Batch

It looks like Janus Films might be further beefing up its distribution of newer titles. Steven Rales, the head of Indian Paintbrush and frequent producer of Wes Anderson's films, has bought both Janus and The Criterion Collection and has pledged to continue both labels' mission statements.
