my buddy recently asked me to make him a cd of "modern music" (knowing full well that my version of "modern music" would be skewed)... this is what i came up with:

Black Mountain - Modern Music
Spindrift - If You Don't Like It... (Get the Fuck Out)
Bright Light Social Hour - Rhubarb Jam
Elf Power - An Old Familiar Scene
Rapture - Out Of The Races And Onto The Tracks
Old Crow Medicine Show - James River Blues
Garage a Trois - Bear No Hair
Blood Meridian - Work Hard, For What?
Phoenix - Too Young
The Quick - All My Money's Gone
The Cold War Kids - Hang Me Up to Dry
The Real Heroes - Metal Only
Moistboyz - Black Train
The Starlight Mints - Black Cat
Clinic - Harmony
Sound of Urchin - Last December
Brothers and Sisters - Mason City
Zoot Woman - Living In A Magazine
The Redwalls - They Are Among Us
Silversun Pickups - Lazy Eye
The Black Angels - Black Grease
On the run from Johnny Law ... ain't no trip to Cleveland.

Glad to see I impressed you with that Rapture song ;). Don't know a lot of those other acts, besides Clinic, Phoenix, Silversun Pickups, and Elf Power. What are the chances the rest are very blues/classic rocknroll inspired acts?

Since the countdown, I've collected all of the Rapture's albums and even made my own little "best of" mixtape. Thanks again for the lead!

Personally, I think my favorite track is "Whoo! Alright Yeah Uh-Huh" (or maybe "No Sex for Ben")--but "Out of the Races..." is still the best for creating converts.

In so many words...

Black Mountain, The Black Angels, Blood Meridian, Spindrift are all great examples of neo-psychedelia (think: Brian Jonestown Massacre).
The Quick, The Real Heroes - 21st Century Glam-Rock
Old Crow Medicine Show, Brothers and Sisters - Alt-Country
Garage a Trois - Three of jazz-rock's strongest modern players (Skerik, Mike Dillon, Stanton Moore) in one supergroup.
Bright Light Social Hour - Local boys whose style ranges from Rapture-y post-punk disco to jazzy instrumental work.
Moistboyz - Ween does metal
The Starlight Mints - Fun indie pop (Vampire Weekend wishes they were them)
Sound of Urchin - Fun, Toadies-esque alt-rock
Zoot Woman - If you like Phoenix, you'll love these guys.
The Redwalls - Derivative of the Beatles... in the best way possible.
The Cold War Kids - Very Blues/Classic Rock'n'Roll Inspired
On the run from Johnny Law ... ain't no trip to Cleveland.

I don't know why I like this so much. The theme music from Kuffs (guest starring Christian Slater's mugshot).

Hey, I love that music too! It's cool because you haven't heard it as much as "Axel F" or even the "Fletch" theme.

It's funny, speaking of music from 90's comedies, here is one that I've been listening to lately... it sounds a lot like the "Top Gun" music, but it's cooler, with just a touch of silly over-the-top-ness (which is pretty much what Hot Shots was). Can't get it out of my head sometimes.

Thomas Newman's theme music from Less Than Zero. Relaxing and very ambient.

Some of Jerry Goldsmith's best work came from an obscure Eric Stoltz film called Lionheart (not the later JCVD one, this film is about the Children's Crusade). Here is possibly the best piece from that score.

Interesting note about the film: it managed to reteam the director, co-screenwriter and composer of Patton. Francis Ford Coppola considered directing but chose to produce instead while Goldsmith and Franklin J. Schnaffer happened to be good friends.

Just watched SNL's Best of Belushi and he does a pretty mean Joe Cocker. The sound quality isn't great in the video, but I've seen a lot worse on YouTube.

Tenet: Criterion Edition. Now with more Backwards Man.

You guys know that I never listen to the radio any more, so most stuff from the past decade would all be new to me.

I heard this song over the speakers at my gym, and it really got my attention. It's from 2006, and it instantly reminded me of Jim Croce with an updated sound. Never heard of the group, and I honestly don't care much for the video (reminds me a lot of Fighting Gravity, perhaps too much), but the song is awesome (though the lyrics are truly bizarre, even disturbing).

What other songs from this group would you guys recommend (if any)?

Only song I ever found bearable was Laura, off their first album. They also made an horrific cover of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb too...

Not sure if it's a found sound, i thought someone had this song on their list but i can't exactly remember, either way. i've grown to love the song Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins, so if it was one that introduced me to it, thanks

i actually like a few of the songs off of Scissor sisters last album NIght Work, in particular Any Which Way, it came out last year i think. It's a very 80s album, you might like it.

Here is some new stuff i'm listening to.

Howlin for You by black keys, i first got it about 6 months ago when i heard it on the show, but now it seems to be everywhere, so it's lost it's sheen a bit, but it's still catchy, this below is just a snippet of it which introduced me to it.

Also this one, it's a bit reminiscent of mgmt , but much better in my opinion

Young Blood, by The Naked and Famous
