This is a tough one. The first time he impressed me was in Fargo, but the first thing I remember him in is Total Recall. I'll go with Fargo because he was easily the best part of that season.

Im gonna have to say Fargo Season 2 aswell. Although i first noticed him back in Life (1999) with Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence.

So Fargo S2 wins! (with 3 votes)

Got to go with The Talented Mr. Ripley for me. Loved that film.

I'm going to be an asshole and say Blue Jasmine because it was the first time her acting impressed me and Indiana Jones is the oldest movie I've seen where she a played a prominent role.

While i had seen her in The Gift first but i really noticed her first in Bandits. No Matter, Elizabeth wins! (with 2 votes)

Next up: Something different

Something different as in, a film.

Who was the break out performer in Glory?

Just for shits and giggles, if you can name the minor role player/character actor/actress in addition to the break out performer, that will get a vote too (targeted towards character actors like Steve Buscemi).

For my votes:

Denzel Washington

and (for minor role breakout)

Richard Riehle

Totally agree with you on Denzel, he was powerful in this one.

For "minor" breakout though I'd go Andre Braugher. Just a glimpse of what he would become.

Agreeing with Walleye. Braughter's a TV legend (who else can claim to have been part of the John Munch shared universe and done a show with Andy Samberg?).

Totally agree. I guess I thought the idea was who was a "minor" character in the movie. Braugher has proven to be a stellar actor no matter the genre.

Though he made for a good Jeffrey Dahmer and appeared in a horror franchise, I'm going with The Hurt Locker. Before that, he was really just another actor struggling to get by (same with Anthony Mackie, without The Hurt Locker, he probably wouldn't be Falcon).
