W emailed me the first pick from his phone.

He will take Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

And we're off!

That's good. It didn't feel right for me to have Star Wars being one of those rare people from my generation that doesn't really get into the franchise.

Avengers 2: Age of Ultron for me.

Wow, didn't know we were off!

Okay, had a long hard think and I've come to a conclusion. Mockingjay should bring in a safe $350m, maybe a little more for it's final installment, a good start. However, if I'm to have any chance at winning a escaping this trapdoor, I need to aim high, and with a pretty high basement of at least $300m (MOS made $290 without Batman), and the potential for so much more, I have to go with...

BATMAN Vs SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

EDIT: Ah hell, I'm already backloading my slate again!!!

Ballsy pick, Surf, considering it'll only have 39 days to justify you picking it that high.

In 6 weekends Man of Steel had made $285m of its $291m total. F7 will have made in excess of $320m after just four weekends in a similar slot. Unless it jumps its date, I have no issues with it's amount of time in the game or lack thereof.

That is a bold pick. And, there is a lot of upside. But, I think you are forgetting to subtract $100 million for Ben Affleck in a superhero costume. ;)

It's all a question of maths.

Superman + Batman (- Affleck in costume / Zach Snyder slow-mos + Zach Synder opening credits x Chris Nolan being an executive producer / Jesse Eisenberg's bald Luthor - Affleck in costume again) = More than Mockingjay.

I'm not great at maths, hence much time spent trying to figure out that equation...

Batman v. Superman's going to break the March record, even if it runs three hours as rumored. And a lot of that is going to be people seeing how Affleck (who recently had hits in Argo and Gone Girl) will play Batman (remember, no one thought Michael Keaton could play Batman back when he was first cast).

Yeah, well, Clooney's a fair actor, but most people have chosen to forget his turn as Batman.

P.S. Really, Boosh? General Woundwort from Watership Down? Interesting choice for avatar...

I wanted to use an image from that movie that scared the most people.

And technically, Batman and Robin was really more about Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze and Warner Bros.' requirement that the film sell toys (against the wishes of Schumacher, who was really set on doing Batman: Year One and following Burton's approach) than Clooney. Hell, Schwarzenegger got top billing over Clooney, who was simply along for the ride.

So many things to love.

Love that the draft has started.

Love that Star Wars was first, ballsy pick and the right one.

And love Watership Down, one of my favorite books ever.

Only 5 more picks to go :)

I really can't see Star Wars outdoing Age of Ultron. This isn't 2005 and December has never had a $100 million opener (the first Hobbit holds the record with $85 million). And for it to pass Age of Ultron, it's going to need Avatar-like holds. I can't see that happening.

But at least this time, it's not going to a crazy case where the year's biggest doesn't go until Round 13.

Episode I made $700M adjusted with mediocre reviews. The worst a Star Wars movie has ever done adjusted is Episode II which made $430M. You have Abrams directing, the original cast returning, buzz is through the roof 8 months ahead of the movie (and it looks friggin amazing) and The Avengers outperformed all expectations and any other individual Marvel movie by $200M... you could easily see Age of Ultron dip a little vs. the first movie and Episode VII exploding.
