I have to say I love the weirdness of Barb and Star's trailer.

I do too. Plus Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo did great work on Bridemaids and I'm excited to see how they'll follow that up.

Busy 24 hours on the news front:
-Hulu has dated United States vs. Billie Holliday for February 26th and Boss Level for March 5th.

-Saint Maud will be eligible for the US award shows now. A24 will release it in theaters on January 29th followed by a pay cable premiere via Epix-on February 12th (guess I'll have to order a pizza from Domino's to get that free month of Epix's streaming service they're giving away right now....).

-Skydance is trying to sell the rights to the Chris Pratt sci-fi actioner The Tomorrow War-which is currently at Paramount and dated for a July release-to a streaming service. They held a virtual screening for all the major players this past weekend and the interest is reportedly very high.

-Sony officially moved Morbius from March to October 8th. A fall shift for No Time to Die also appears to be imminent.

-Judas and the Black Messiah will have its official premiere at Sundance at the end of the month. Social media review embargo was lifted today and the early buzz is very strong with many critics believing it has a chance to emerge as an Oscar frontrunner-particularly for Daniel Kaluuya as Best Supporting Actor.

Morbius was pulled from March months ago. For some reason, Box Office Mojo never removed it from their schedule.

And between Saint Maud and Horizon Line, has Epix become the new dumping ground for indie genre titles? And I have one of those free Epix codes but I have a feeling my local arthouse will get Saint Maud on the 29th.

As for Barb and Star, Bridesmaids was a decade ago. A lot has changed in comedy and something like this is as niche as one can get.

I know a few folks who have seen Judas and the Black Messiah and they were all disappointed.

The Many Saints of Newark has been pushed to 9/24/2021. I'm surprised Warner Bros. is still planning to release this theatrically. Has David Chase done anything of note post-Sopranos?

Meanwhile, The Courier has been moved out of the Oscar race to 3/19/2021.

Yeah, surely a movie prequel of a TV series belongs on the small screen.

but then again, some contracts have a certain amount of screens that are guaranteed by the distributor, so maybe that's why?

In a move completely out of left field, Warner Bros. has moved up Godzilla vs. Kong to 3/26/2021. There is still nothing out yet for this one.

New Searchlight Dates:
The Night House 7/16/21
The Eyes of Tammy Faye 9/24/21
Antlers 10/29/21
Nightmare Alley 12/3/21

In other news, Netflix has acquired the worldwide rights to Connected-which is now known once again by its original title of The Mitchells vs. The Machines-from Sony.

I'm surprised the Connected deal didn't happen sooner. This would have been a better Best Animated Feature contender for Netflix than Over the Moon. Maybe Sony thought they could make the "technology is evil" subgenre not be box office poison?

Meanwhile, I have to wonder if Sony Pictures Animation will do anything that's not Spider-Man exclusively for Netflix. Some of their future plans (such as adult animation) seem rather niche.

Another wave of date shifts tonight:
No Time to Die 10/8/21 (from 4/2/21)
Nobody 4/2/21 (from 2/26/21)
Last Night in Soho 10/22/21 (from 4/23/21)

With the expected No Time to Die move now official ,seems like only a matter of time before F9 and Black Widow follow suit.

At this point, they should just send No Time to Die to Netflix. I can't be the only one who's gotten tired of waiting for it.

And Universal has pushed BIOS to 8/13/2021.

And Sony continues to push back titles.

Peter Rabbit 2 6/11/2021 (from 4/2/2021)
Cinderella 7/16/2021 (from TBA 2021)
Ghostbusters: Afterlife 11/11/2021 (from 6/19/2021)
Morbius 1/21/2022 (from 10/8/2021)
Uncharted 2/11/2022 (from 7/16/2021)

I'm beginning to think Sony should just send these to streaming. It's not like they will be any good (and Uncharted is probably vaporware at this point).

It could be a contractual issue.

But I agree. If you push these titles you're creating a gap. And why not fill that gap with a few select titles that go day and date? Chances are you'll end up making more money with them. Peter Rabbit 2 and Cinderella in particular as families are starved of distractions. And Morbius because it'll probably bomb so they might as well save the 100m or so marketing p+a spend.

Uncharted depends mostly on the script. If they threw out everything and started from scratch when Holland came onboard it has a chance of being great. It seems like they may have as that's when Playstation Originals took over. Holland looks excellent as Nate in the one photo we have right now. The limited photos of the set and costumes look like they're taking it seriously. I question Wahlberg as Sully. He thought it was kosher to change major background characteristics of the characters when Russell had it.

It stopped and restarted filming because of Coronavirus like everything else. They pushed the release back like everything else. I choose to believe that it took so long getting to the filming because they wanted to get it right.
Tenet: Criterion Edition. Now with more Backwards Man.
