Re: 2018 Academy Awards
Things that stand out to me:
1A Disaster Artist got seriously hit hard after the Franco scandal.
1B which made room for Get Out to get four (deserving) nominations. That seems to be their "normal people like this, right?" Movie this year.
Best actress is stacked. They could barely give Meryl her legally obligated nomination.
I'm kind of stunned by Mudbound. Not that I don't think it's deserving (I haven't seen it), I just haven't heard much buzz besides Netflix itself pushing it. And it's Netflix so the pitchforks must be misplaced.
Roseanne's sister and Sheldon's mom is probably going to have a statue.
It's been a down year for animation.
Glad they recognized Baby Driver in the sound categories.

Re: 2018 Academy Awards
Mudbound is a result of Oscars so white, because it's truly a terrible film and Blige is barely in it.
It's an indie bonanza on the music side, with Sufjan Stevens and Johnny Greenwood getting noms.
Glad Lady Bird got its director and writer (and of course acting) noms. Well deserved.
Baffled as to how the Post can get anything. A terrible film. But it is a transparent attempt to address Trump so maybe I shouldn't be surprised.
Surprised Armie Hammer got ignored for supporting actor.
This will finally be Deakins's year.
And agreed on Baby Driver. It was technically better than every blockbuster.

Re: 2018 Academy Awards
-Very surprised to see Best Picture and Director nods for Phantom Thread. Expected those slots to go to I, Tonya and McDonagh respectively.
-Also surprised by Armie Hammer's absence in the Best Supporting Actor race. I guess the Academy wanted to reward Sony and Ridley Scott for cutting Kevin Spacey from their movie.
-I knew it was going to happen, but it's comical to see Three Billboards pick up a nod for Best Original Screenplay. That script is an absolute CLUSTERFUCK.
-Glad to see Get Out, Lady Bird and The Shape of Water get the recognition they deserve
-Top (realistic) snubs for me were I, Tonya for Best Picture and Original Screenplay, Jessica Chastain for Best Actress, James Franco for Best Actor and Holly Hunter for Best Supporting Actress.

That actually wouldn't surprise me. I wonder who they're going to hire to digitally insert into The Usual Suspects when they want to do a new Blu-Ray in a few years.transformers2 wrote: -Also surprised by Armie Hammer's absence in the Best Supporting Actor race. Re: 2018 Academy Awards
At least Lesley Manville got nominated. I'd be surprised if Janney's performance was better.
Disappointed that The Lost City of Z and Good Time were essentially forgotten, along with Hong Chau's performance in Downsizing.
McDonagh's won before so they likely decided to let someone else have a shot.
And I have a feeling they'll give Cinematography to Dunkirk and wait until Deakins does another worthy film.

Re: 2018 Academy Awards
Im happy Get Out got recognized
The Lost City of Z is a snoozefest boosh, glad it didnt get anything
Mudbound was also recognised by imdb.com so im not surprised it got some love, though i haven't seen it
Very happy Blade Runner got a couple noms especially Deakins
What was the James Franco scandal? I must have missed something....
Good for Baby Driver, -on the sound part and editing- its not a great film
Unsurprisingly, i haven't heard of any of the doco's, but keen to see them
Agreed on Chris Plummer, he was a last minute shuffle. My money is on Richard Jenkins for that category- though its a complete guess! (havent seen any of those noms)
Can Daniel Day Lewis win his 4th best actor oscar?? Be a bit sad to see him go (if he does retire)
Also Visual effects is stacked: im thinking War for the planet of the Apes wins, while not nearly as good as the other 2, the effects were exemplary.

Re: 2018 Academy Awards
James Franco has been accused by multiple women of sexual harassment. There is a history but he'd long been defended (and still is, see Alison Brie's comments) due to his many connections. In the process, all this points to how much of a hypocrite Judd Apatow is. A few months back, Apatow was talking about how he could change the industry for the better but was one of the people enabling the culture of harassing people through his entourage (he's also defended outed rapists in the past, something that hasn't been pointed out).
Of course, it's kind of surprising that the Academy even took attention. They've nominated admitted anti-Semites two years in a row now.
And whether or not you liked it, The Lost City of Z is a gorgeous film. I was sure it would get a Best Cinematography nomination.

I mean, it's a little crazy that the Oscar went to a film about a woman who fucks a fish!

It is crazy in itself, but the film was the frontrunner, as crazy as it is
