Alexandre Dumas' novel is a classic for the ages not every French has read and every French knows, as it is one of the most adapted on the screen.
A new film based on it made its world premiere in Cannes and was released here in late June, and is on its way to becoming one of the biggest successes of the year here in France (already 3 million entries in 3 weeks). It will probably be France's selection for the Academy Awards. It's a fastuous, well-made, exciting 3-hour long adventure/romanesque/swashbuckling revenge movie. A bit too clean for my own taste but very efficient. Here's the trailer with English subs.
