Someone on Reddit who worked on the film (the posts have since been deleted but a Twitter account saved them) put all the blame on Stephen Gaghan, who went into the project without doing any pre-production and would hold up filming by having no idea how to stage or block scenes and would often go on tirades. Also, Universal had to have reshoots done with a different writer and director.
