Well it appears that J.J. Abrams' "Overlord has nothing to do with Cloverfield" statement wasn't a lie. That being said, this trailer makes it look like it could end up being just as much of a mess as The Cloverfield Paradox.

It seems like they are going for a John Carpenter vibe with this. But I'd expect that the end result will be much less tongue-in-cheek (seeing how the script was co-written by Billy Ray) than what the trailer depicts.
Edit: and I found out the lead is Kurt Russell's son, further cementing the Carpenter comparison.
