I thought this was supposed to be a serious espionage drama, not a film that looks to be trying way too hard to out-John Wick John Wick.

I guess the director wanted a product that matches its "straight to Skinemax" title.

What in the sweet fuck led you to that conclusion? It's from the co-director of John Wick and the screenwriter of 300: Rise of an Empire.

It's a film from Focus (Universal's art label), it's set in Berlin (where like half of the movies about the Cold War are set), and it was originally titled The Coldest City. Combined with its classy cast, you would expect it to be more John le Carre than John Wick.

And writers and directors branch out all the time. The writers of American Crime Story's first season wrote both Ed Wood (Oscar-winning biopic in black and white) and Problem Child (loud, kid-aimed comedy with lots of destruction).
