Trailer: American Reunion

The Gang is back for one last slice.

(NOTE: This Trailer only shows photobooth pictures of the cast. I apologize. I don't know if the photobooth trailer gonna be shown in theaters yet, but if it is, it might be shown before Warrior or Bucky Larson.)

This franchise was never good to begin with. I can't understand how a one-joke premise can be stretched into seven movies.

Also, Universal must not have any faith in it if it's coming out in April rather than the summer like the first three.

Meh, summer has extended into April a little bit the past few years. Remember, what was it, the 4th Fast and Furious setting an April record?

And the previous record was, I was right, Fast and Furious, and that was in EARLY April. I think we'd be inclined to agree that it may not have been the greatest movie, but it still made money. Why couldn't the same thing be true of American Reunion?

Well, most people have forgotten about this franchise. In an era of Apatow and The Hangover, this series is a dinosaur. Also, how many series have gone from being straight-to-DVD to theatrical? I can only think of one (the [Rec] series).

Wasn't just that, though, it was theatrical first, THEN straight-to-DVD, now back. An inexact but worthwhile comparison might be the High School Musical series.

I guess you could also say that people forgot about Rocky and Indiana Jones too, since they waited so long to make theatrical sequels to those.

But Rocky and Indiana Jones weren't just film series. Those were characters that defined their eras. People went to see Rocky Balboa and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull more than them being new installments. They wanted to relive those good old days when they wanted to be them.

American Pie doesn't have that same effect. Jim, Michelle and Stifler aren't Rocky or Indiana Jones and fucking a pie isn't as memorable as Rocky vs. Apollo Creed or the opening of the Ark of the Covenant. And besides, the cheap sequels already diluted the value of the series.

I'm not contending that those characters are on the same level. BUT I would say that there are some people who find some nostalgia in it, and we know nostalgia sells.

They tried to sell Scream 4 on nostalgia and that didn't work.

Well, let's use your extensive studio knowledge here. Scream 4 = Weinstein. Shitty at promoting wide films for the most part, good at promoting their limited release / Oscar candidate films.

Universal, on the other hand, markets the CRAP out of most of their stuff.

I think this is the most apt comparison for a new American Pie movie and it makes me nervous since I have it on my full year slate.

Then again, I can only hope that a straight comedy will always beat out a horror-comedy.
