Also just saw on Facebook that Varsity Blues actor Ron Lester died today at 45. He'd been on life support for four months.

I think Robin Lord Taylor (who plays The Penguin on Gotham) said it best in his Tweet: "If any of us survive the year, it'll be a miracle."

A couple of the best all-time coaches in American sports died today.

Pat Summit, the legendary women's basketball coach for the Tennessee Volunteers. Possibly the greatest coach ever, she led the Vols to 8 championships and has more wins than any D1 NCAA coach (men or women). She was really the face of the sport for about 30 years, starting right at the beginning of Title IX, and retired early because of early onset dementia. She was 64.

Buddy Ryan, possibly the best defensive coordinator the game of football has ever seen. He was the architect of the 1985 Bears 46 defense that's considered by many to be the best of all time. He also was the Vikings defensive line coach in the 1970's when it was considered one of the greatest of all time and he coached the Reggie White/Jerome Brown/Seth Joyner Philadelphia Eagles. His twin sons also coach in the league one as a head coach and one as a defensive coordinator.

Bud Spencer died. His westerns and buddy movies with Terrence Hill were classics on TV when I grew up.

That totally sucks.

At least now he and his beloved Gilda are together again. I'm sure he's happy to catch up with Richard Pryor and Cleavon Little too. Not to mention Harvey Korman, Madeline Khan, Peter Boyle and Marty Feldman.

We lost two American sports stars today. One of the best young pitchers in the world, Jose Fernandez, died in a boating accident this morning at the age of 24. He spent some time in Cuban prisons as a kid because he tried to defect with his family multiple times. He seriously could have been a legend.

Also, a Mount Rushmore golfer passed today (Woods, Nicklaus, Palmer, and Jones for me). Arnold Palmer was golf's first big celebrity of the television age and battled with Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player throughout the 1960's and 1970's. He was 87.

Maybe I'll order a sweet tea mixed with lemonade (his favorite drink, known as an "Arnold Palmer") tomorrow in his honor.

As I mentioned in the film review thread, Curtis Hanson passed away last week at age 71. Though not a household name, he was the director of the Best Picture-nominated L.A. Confidential as well as box office hits The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, The River Wild, and 8 Mile. He also directed Wonder Boys, which won Bob Dylan an Oscar for his song "Things Have Changed". His last film was 2012's Chasing Mavericks, which he co-directed with Michael Apted.

An underrated director whose filmography deserves a second look.

Veteran character actor Michael Massee, who had roles in the Amazing Spider-Man series as well as well as Se7en, The Game and Amistad, passed away on Wednesday, October 26 at the age of 61.

He was also inadvertently the one responsible for the death of Brandon Lee; in March 1993, Massee fired a gun at Lee during filming, not knowing that crew members had improperly prepared dummy cartridges for a revolver, accidentally creating a live round in the process.
