Fred Willard (86), natural causes. Whenever he popped up in something he always made it just a bit funnier.

Completely agree. He was the rare performer that made generating laughs look so effortless and could deliver no matter what the quality of the material he had to work with. It's been great to see so many prominent comedians recognize his gifts since the news of passing was made public yesterday afternoon.

Filmmaker Lynn Shelton has passed away at age 54. Some of us might not know the name but she was known in the mumblecore scene and directed a lot of television.

One of the greatest French actors passed away recently, Michel Piccoli, aged 94. He broke out in Jean-Luc Godard's Le Mépris in the early 60's, and soon became the favorite actor of some of the best European filmmakers, Bunuel, Ferreri, Sautet...
Ironically, Sautet's regular screenwriter and dialogist, Jean-Loup Dabadie, died a few days later.

Piccoli and Dabadie were both part of Sautet's masterpieces from the 70's. If you have never seen "Les choses de la vie" (The Things of Life) or "César et Rosalie" (Cesar and Rosalie), two of the greatest films ever made, both directed by Sautet and written by Dabadie, the former with Piccoli and Romy Schneider in the lead, the latter with Yves Montand, Romy Schneider and Samy Frey, Piccoli participating as the narrator, you have to watch them.

Most recently, Piccoli starred in Nanni Moretti's Habemus Papam.

He’s from my alma mater. He was the top rated male gymnast the year we boycotted the Olympics. If not for politics he’d have been our third medalist.
