Color me surprised. I expected Black Swan to take it seeing how Venice likes Aronofsky (and word was supposedly much better on Black Swan than on Somewhere).

A big surprise considering how muted the critics have been about this one. But hey, it's Tarantino on the jury and he has a boner, literally and figuratively, for Sophia.

Re: Coppola's Somewhere Takes Venice
French critics were much better for Somewhere than they were for Black Swan, so I am not surprised by the win between these two, but it's still a bit surprising. What surprises me most is that Tsui Hark's didn't get anything while the word is excellent on this one, and given how QT is a big fan of the Chinese director...

Re: Coppola's Somewhere Takes Venice
Well it's not the first time he is charged with favoritism. When he was head of the Jury at Cannes in 2004, he handed the Palme d'Or to Farenheit 911, which was a Weinstein film, and everyone thought "Huh... Tarantino makes a big favour to the Weinstein with this..."...
