Best Movies of 2010 ... so far

Post by NSpan »

So, whatd'ya got? I've been SEVERELY lacking in my movie-going priorities.

I've barely seen anything. But I'm looking forward to catching up on MacGruber, Iron Man 2, Human Centipede, Splice, Youth in Revolt, Exit Through the Gift Shop, Predators, etc.

Anyways, here's what I got

"A" Movies
Kick-Ass (A+)
Defendor (A)
Hot Tub Time Machine (A-)

"B" Movies
Shutter Island (B-)
Inception (B-)

"C" Movies
The Book of Eli (C+)
The Crazies (C+)
Cop Out (C)
Legion (C)

"D" Movies
After.Life (D+)
Daybreakers (D+) <--Might need to rewatch this one... at least to give Sam Neill and Willem Defoe another chance.

Five Best:

Hot Tub Time Machine
Splice
Toy Story 3
Fish Tank (it never played here so I watched it online and really liked it)
Oceans

Five Worst (that I saw in a theatre):

Why Did I Get Married Too?
The Bounty Hunter
The Wolfman
The Losers
Clash Of The Titans

Biggest Disappointments

The Wolfman (so this is what a year of delays and $150 million creates, proof that Captain America will likely be the worst movie of 2010)
Clash Of The Titans (Leterrier missed the point completely and Fiennes apparently watched Battlefield Earth too many times while preparing for the part)
Cop Out (the beginning of the end for Kevin Smith)
Ramona and Beezus (when you realize that they adapted the fourth book as the first movie, you know you are in trouble)
Green Zone (Damon and Greengrass go from Bourne to...a boring Iraq movie with a mixed message?)
Shrek Forever After (made Shrek The Third look like Wall-E)
Everything on this post is strictly the opinion and only the opinion of Buscemi.

Chasing Amy was "the beginning of the the end for Kevin Smith." Cop Out, despite being pretty mediocre, was his best film in years.

Five Best:
Shutter Island
Toy Story 3
Iron Man 2
Kick-Ass
How to Train Your Dragon

Haven't see yet: Inception (it will be released this Friday in my country), Salt (next week). Looking forward for The Expendables, Resident Evil: Afterlife, Tuesday, after Christmas (an acclaimed Romanian movie) and Tron: Legacy. BUT I don't feel a parfume of Oscar yet :(

Five Worst:
Killers
The Back-Up Plan
The Bounty Hunter
Clash Of The Titans
Alice in Wonderland - sorry BUT this is another very well packaged candy but bitter - form without substance.

I haven't seen and I don't plan to see: The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Sex and the City 2, The Last Airbender, Marmaduke, Jonah Hex...

At least he tried with Chasing Amy. With Cop Out, it was clear that he only did it for the money (and because the initial script title was a dick joke).

I strongly disagree on that one. Clerks 2 and Zach and Miri Make A Porno are both genius imo. Smith has not met his downfall at all.

I almost made this thread yesterday and was getting on right now to make it...

10
Kick-Ass - Film of the year so far. There's a great plot, tons of action, and hilariousness throughout.
Toy Story 3 - Loved it better than the first one.

9
Inception - Great film, moves down because I compared it to Kick-Ass, which I was much happier with. Definitely not worthy of #3 all-time though I'm not opposed to it being in the Top 250.
Shutter Island
Hot Tub Time Machine - Hilarious.

8
The Book of Eli - Fallout 3 + The Road a little watered down for the average movie-goer.
The A-Team - Action-packed, slightly cheesy, and three of the four Teamers were great. I didn't even mind Rampage, like I thought I would.

7
She's Out of My League - Hilarious, some down parts, not quotable.
Iron Man 2 - I loved the first, but the second was rather middling.
Death at a Funeral

6
Cop Out - Funny moments throughout, but not great.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice - Nostalgia and Jay Burachel (though not as good as he was in "She's Out of My League) push this higher than it should be.

5
Date Night - Not nearly as good as a Carrell/Fey film should be.
Yout in Revolt (as Cousin Vinny would say) - A few funny scenes, but all in all; bad.

3
Grown Ups - For some reason nobody can make a good family comedy unless it's animated. This should be the biggest disappointment of the year, but all these guys have been awful lately.

Stuff I'll get to soon (or more likely when they go to DVD):
Defendor
Alice in Wonderland
How to Train Your Dragon
Clash of the Titans
Shrek 4
Despicable Me
Dinner for Schmucks

Stuff I may or may not get to:
Percy Jackson
The Crazies
Brooklyn's Finest
Repo Men
Greenberg
The Runaways
A Nightmare on Elm Street
MacGruber
Prince of Persia
Get Him to the Greek
Splice
Karate Kid
Winter's Bone
The Last Airbender
Predators
Salt

Wide Releases I'm probably not even going to give a chance (convince me):
Daybreakers
Leap Year
Spy Next Door
Extraordinary Measures
Legion
Tooth Fairy
Edge of Darkness
When in Rome
Dear John
From Paris With Love
The Wolfman
Ghost Writer
A Prophet
Green Zone
Our Family Wedding
Remember Me
Bounty Hunter
Wimpy Kid
The Last Song
Why Did I Get Married, Too (actually a IMDb Bottom 200 film) #100
The Backup Plan
The Losers
Oceans
Furry Vengeance (actually a IMDb Bottom 200 film) #43
Just Wright
Letters to Juliet
Robin Hood
Sex in the City 2
Killers
Marmaduke (actually a IMDb Bottom 200 film) #83
Jonah Hex
Knight & Day
Eclipse
Ramona and Beezus
Cats and Dogs 2 (I may have to see it because someone likes the trailers a lot)
Charlie St. Cloud
Tenet: Criterion Edition. Now with more Backwards Man.

Honestly, I'm surprised I even gave this one a chance. But I was pleasantly surprised (and it certainly helped that my expectations were set incredibly low). The trailer made it look truly atrocious... but it really isn't as ridiculous as you'd expect. Silly, sure. But cool, too. The actions sequences were good, the dialogue is passable--though above-average if you consider the genre--and the characters (at least the ones that are meant to be likable) are pretty likable... if a tad underdeveloped. And the story? Well, it is what it is. If you can accept that, what's left over is a fun action/horror flick that's actually worth seeing.

Not exactly a glowing review, I know. But if you happen upon it, go ahead and watch it. It's a decent throwback to some 80s classics that we both grew up watching.
