Not too surprising. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull also premiered at Cannes.

Re: 2023 Festivals/Awards Thread
The Idol sounds like a total train wreck that will get praise because A24 produced it. Lily Rose Depp should not under any circumstances be tasked to carry a project. She might have a famous surname and look like her mother but she's not a good actor.

Re: 2023 Festivals/Awards Thread
If it's anything like Levinson's last film, then it's going to be awful. And that one had good actors.
Re: 2023 Festivals/Awards Thread
To me, it feels like Levinson is a hack who got lucky with Euphoria. He's not much of a director and as a screenwriter, Deep Water might have been one of the worst-scripted studio films in recent memory.
He's pretty much Taylor Sheridan with a different kind of excess.

I am mistaken, The Idol is a TV series, not a film

Re: 2023 Festivals/Awards Thread
The long-delayed The Marsh King's Daughter is opening the Tribeca festival. Seeing how this festival tends to screen a lot of low-profile titles, I have to imagine it ends up being a day-and-date release somewhere. It also seems like Amazon no longer has international rights as it's not listed in any coming soon list related to Prime.

Re: 2023 Festivals/Awards Thread
Looks like Indiana Jones is a disaster. The Metacritic so far is a 53, worse than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull's 65.

The North American rights for Cannes competition titles May December and Anatomy of a Fall have been acquired by Netflix and Neon respectively.

Re: 2023 Festivals/Awards Thread
Can't say I'm surprised Netflix got Todd Haynes' latest. He kind of burned his bridges with the studios after his last two flopped.

Re: 2023 Festivals/Awards Thread
Portman's career isn't what it used to be and outside of Moore, the cast consists of character actors and people without Wikipedia pages. In addition, Sky Cinema already got the UK rights so that could have driven down the asking price.
As for the possibility of a low budget, it was shot in Georgia last fall over five weeks so it could have cost less than your typical Blumhouse production. $3 million, $4 million tops, I'd guess.

Re: 2023 Festivals/Awards Thread
Ah yes, Georgia has a competitive film tax credit, so that makes sense. And I've seen Sky put 1-2m into a project
