I saw the Spotlight comparisons also in the reviews. Not a great sign.

It might still do okay box office but it will be a miracle if it turns out to be a big awards contender.

Del Toro (and Mark Gustafson)'s Pinocchio is really good according to early word. If voters don't confuse it with the Zemeckis Pinocchio, it could be the film to beat in the Best Animated Feature category.

Babylon is going to start screening for industry people very soon. Paramount sent out its "For Your Consideration" materials earlier today, which confirmed that Diego Calva and Margot Robbie will be entered in the lead categories while Brad Pitt, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo and Li Jun Li will campaign for supporting. The official running time is also a whopping 3 hours and 8 minutes.

The run time was confirmed a little while back. There are rumors of Robbie being a strong Best Actress contender which while baffling, likely happens as the Academy loves caricature and giving apology Oscars by the truckload.

I just wish this had been the Anna May Wong biopic this was rumored at one point to be instead of something that looks so synthetic. You could have a great story about racism in the film industry, how Wong conquered it be one of the first big movie stars, and her legacy after her passing but Hollywood refuses to admit to its dark past and its treatment of their talent.

As I expected, it looks like Babylon is going to be Chazelle's first critical bomb. Early word is mixed but that might not stop its awards chances.

Yet another year where studio titles are somehow eligible. I haven't taken these seriously ever since Juno won Best Picture even though Fox covered the entire budget.

The Gotham Awards aren't always a great indicator of Oscars success, but there are some potentially interesting implications from last night's ceremony-particularly with Danielle Deadwyler winning Best Lead Performance over the likes of Cate Blanchett, Michelle Yeoh and Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan taking home Best Supporting Performance.

Quan is, or at least was, Gold Derby's Oscar favorite for Supporting Actor. It's a decent feel good story, as his performance was one of the few things I liked about Everything Everywhere All at Once, but is it really a deserving performance? It would be like giving an Oscar to Chris Pratt for playing Starlord as slightly less comedic.

Looks like Apple should have gone ahead and released Napoleon for this awards season instead of pushing it to next year. Emancipation looks dead on arrival and it's certainly not going to revive Will Smith's career.

The New York Film Critics Circle awards were interesting.

Best Picture: Tar
Best Director: S.S. Rajamouli, RRR
Best Actor: Colin Farrell, The Banshees of Inisherin/After Yang
Best Actress: Cate Blanchett, Tar
Best Supporting Actor: Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once
Best Supporting Actress: Keke Palmer, Nope
Best Animated Feature: Marcel the Shell with Shoes On
Best Non-Fiction Film: All the Beauty and the Bloodshed
Best First Film: Aftersun

So The Fabelmans is completely shut out while Nope and RRR get their first awards (it's also of note that After Yang, a title that is more than likely ineligible for Oscars, shared the Best Actor award). It remains to be seen if Marcel will be eligible for Best Animated Feature or gets disqualified like The Lego Movie was eight years ago for mixing live-action with animation. It does however deserve (but probably won't get) a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination.

Marcel the Shell is eligible for Best Animated Feature. That ruling came down a month or so ago

As for the rest of the awards, that's definitely a good early sign for Blanchett, Farrell and Quan. Cool to see Keke Palmer win too

I really do not get the appeal of Farrell's performance. He plays a bumbling idiot for two hours and there's not much else to the performance. Is it just a weak year or were people simply surprised a recent film of his didn't suck?

You're on an island with that take man. Banshees of Inisherin has been widely accaimed by any metric you want to use and Farrell's performance is a big part of that enthusiasm
