Very surprising result at Cannes this year. everyone I know who saw Triangle of Sadness shrugged at it - felt it was too long, too obvious, and a step down from The Square and Force Majeur. We all thought Decision to Leave was the clear winner.

But the voting board seems to love giving awards to those who have had success in the past, kind of like how the people who select the movies at Toronto used to have a habit of showing every new movie from a filmmaker who had a success there in the past, even if the new one wasn't any good.

Meanwhile, not giving the Palme d'Or to Decision to Leave might have been a reactionary move over giving it to Titane last year.

Interesting. There were some whispers among the US trades and critics that Holy Spider was going to win. Did you get that impression at all?

No, none at all. Would be a major surprise if it had won, as it's too cold and brutal for a Palm D'Or (though I guess Elephant and The White Ribbon are cold and tough)

Holy Spider makes me think of that movie that was banned in Pakistan recently as that film was also about a real-life serial killer in a conservative nation. I wonder if Iran has already banned this film.

In the end, the palmares in such festivals often leave out the fims with the best reviews and word of mouth, so is there still anything surprising about that ? I remember Toni Erdmann and Burning, in their days, were clear favourites, and were snubbed by their respective juries.

Variety released a piece this morning on the Venice Film Festival starting the process of confirming their 2022 lineup. Here are some of the films that are in the mix to screen this year:
Athena
Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths
Blonde
Bones and All
Don't Worry Darling
The Son
Tar
Ticket to Paradise
White Noise

Nothing overly shocking, although it is a bit odd to not see any A24 or Searchlight films on the early consideration list. The Whale, Disappointment Blvd, Poor Things, The Banshees of Inisherin, The Eternal Daughter, Chevalier and Next Goal Wins all feel like they could be primed to have heavy play on the fall festival circuit.

A24 tend to favour TIFF rather than Venice

Now that you mention it, it seems like they purposely avoid Venice. Lean on Pete was the last film of theirs to screen there back in 2017 (they did also acquire First Reformed following its Venice premiere that year). They must believe the Telluride/Toronto tandem is a better launching pad than Venice (or they just simply refuse to leave North America).

Searchlight seems to prefer Toronto as well, considering how often their titles seem to win the grand prize there.

TIFF is english-language oriented, Venice is less so.

Cannes is somewhere in the middle. A24 go there, as do Searchlight, but there's a little less business there.
