It really speaks volumes about the ineptitude of the HFPA when they manage to fuck up a live tweeted ceremony so badly.

Here's the full winners list for those who want to reflect on likely how little bearing the Globes will have on the rest of awards season:

Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy: West Side Story
Best Director: Jane Campion, The Power of the Dog
Best Actor-Drama: Will Smith, King Richard

Best Actor-Musical or Comedy: Andrew Garfield, tick, tick... boom!
Best Actress-Musical or Comedy: Rachel Zegler, West Side Story
Best Supporting Actor: Kodi Smit-McPhee, The Power of the Dog
Best Supporting Actress: Ariana DeBose, West Side Story
Best Screenplay: Kenneth Branagh, Belfast
Best Original Score: Hanes Zimmer, Dune

I genuinely have no idea what will win the Oscar this year.

Originally I thought Belfast because it's so saccharine, but it has had zero audience impact or real buzz.
Power of the Dog is favourite but it's a strange one to win. A Netflix psychological drama Western?
Licorice Pizza is a feel-good romance but again there's no buzz.

That's what makes this season so interesting. There's not a clear-cut favorite in the bunch and I don't think one will materialize until a few weeks out. It would be kind of hilarious if The Power of the Dog did end up winning, especially after there were so many pieces in the trades theorizing that the Academy would award a feel-good crowd-pleaser like Belfast or King Richard to combat the depressing state of the world right now.

I can't see voters raving for a creepfest like Licorice Pizza.

And yeah, Belfast sank like a stone. Focus should have never released it as widely as they did right away. Same thing with Spencer, which went from potential favorite to also-ran in record time despite excellent reviews and the Academy's love for Latinx filmmakers.

The Power of the Dog seems like the safe pick and it will certainly win Best Director but a split is more likely to happen between that category and Best Picture. I don't think West Side Story wins as it, like Belfast, flopped at the box office. Dune seems like the other best option but it getting a Best Picture nomination and potentially winning would show just how terrible last year was for film. It would be like if The Force Awakens had gotten a Best Picture nom back in 2015.

Shows you how forgettable the year was if Don't Look Up was considered one of the year's five best.

And am I the only one who didn't see much in Alana Haim's performance? She pretty much played herself in an underwritten and often stereotypical role. I'll honestly be surprised if we see her in any major future films (see Joanna Newsom, whose only other film performance after Anderson's Inherent Vice was a cameo in Popstar).

But it's not as bad Kodi Smit-McPhee's acting in The Power of the Dog though. If the Razzies were actually still taken seriously, that disaster of a performance would be a big contender for Worst Supporting Actor.

So where on the all-time list does Don't Look Up rank on worst Best Picture nominees?

What a stinker of a Best Picture lineup.

4 I've no interest in ever seeing
3 I like (Dune , Power of the Dog and Licorice Pizza)
2 are underwhelming (CODA and Drive My Car)
1 I don't like but is a very Oscar film (Belfast)

2021 was a poor year in film in general, perhaps the worst in my lifetime. Watch a lot of these nominees be forgotten in a few years while the films that got snubbed (Titane, The French Dispatch, C'mon C'mon, Passing) become better remembered.

Surprised to hear you weren't high on Drive My Car. The praise I've heard in arthouse circles directed towards it over the past couple months has been overwhelming.

Drive My Car plays near me on Friday. I'm unsure of whether to see it in the theatre due to the three hour run time. It seems more like something that could have been two hours.

I haven't been keeping up with my reviews on this site, but while I thought Drive My Car was okay, it's too slow and really a film about the themes of Chekov's Uncle Vanya, which makes it very stage-oriented and uncinematic. If you're looking for a long, cinematic adaptation of a Murakami short story then just watch Burning, which is far better.

I was reading about the disaster so far that is the Favorite Movie voting for the Oscars. My question isn't who is responsible for the Cinderella campaign voting but rather how the Snydercut is eligible. Justice League was already in the 2017 list of eligible titles. Only psychotic people really think it's a new movie.

Ultimately, I expect those in charge of the online voting to throw out the spam votes and just give it to No Way Home before pretending this whole thing never happened.
