The National Board of Review and the Oscars rarely agree on Best Picture and more often than not tend have a recency bias on their picks on most categories. Licorice Pizza might look good at first glance in terms of Oscars but the Academy tends to hate Paul Thomas Anderson, as he's been 0 for eight in terms of Oscars.

And even though it's been winning documentary awards left and right, I'd honestly be surprised if Summer of Soul made the shortlist. Concert documentaries have largely been a non-factor in terms of Oscars and you just know they'll lean towards a compromise pick few saw (**cough**My Octopus Teacher**cough**).

Also, no The Power of the Dog?

While I don't expect it to win, the odds of Licorice Pizza getting nominated for Best Picture seem better by the day. The reviews have been strong even by Anderson's standards and MGM seems to be putting all of their horses behind it.

The most interesting thing here to me here is Rachel Zegler winning Best Actress. Kristen Stewart still seems like a heavy favorite, but the Zegler buzz has been nuts since the embargo lifted on Monday night.

Also, here's an odd little fact that I learned from Variety: The National Board of Review Best Picture Winner has only failed to be nominated at the Oscar Times one time in each of the last four decades save for the 80's-in which two failed to get nominated. If that continues this decade, the rest of the winners will be nominated as Da 5 Bloods failed to get nominated last year.

I think West Side Story's stellar early word ends any chance of In the Heights getting Oscar nominations. I had this being a dark horse in the event West Side Story failed with critics but since this one's getting better word, it officially makes In the Heights another film that critics loved but failed to win with audiences.

The West Side Story buzz also makes MGM's move to change Cyrano's release strategy puzzling. Did anyone in New York get to see this one before these awards were given out?

Meanwhile, I didn't mention this earlier but one thing I don't like about the NBR awards is that over the past several years, they'll give awards to films that haven't had their critic embargoes lifted (Don't Look Up) or had them lifted the day of the announcement (Nightmare Alley, West Side Story). It creates the suggestion that some of the voters either didn't watch said films, distributors paid off voters, or that they didn't tally all the votes until the day before. There's something really fishy about all that.

The awards lineup seems to be solidifying a bit as Being the Ricardos and Don't Look Up are managing mixed early word (the embargoes that were only lifted today on these two were not a good sign). The former might still be in it for a few acting noms but the latter looks DOA in terms of awards.

Makes you wonder if next year, we'll return to seeing these hyped-up awards titles premiering at festivals. Because with the exceptions of Licorice Pizza and West Side Story, it didn't seem to work for a lot of these that passed on debuting in the circuit.

It looks like they simply consulted GoldDerby for their opinions. But does the Foreign Press ever actually watch the movies?

This is the Critics' Choice, not the Golden Globes.

Oh, now I see. I misread it and wondered why the Globes were suddenly revamping categories.

The lineup really shows you how terrible this year was for movies. It's either all predictable or showering praise on things hardly anyone saw or truly raved about. The Power of the Dog never even played in my local market before it hit Netflix.

The first reviews for A Journal for Jordan have dropped and it looks like it could be the Razzie favorite. Good thing Sony will be able to offset any losses with their No Way Home distribution fee.

That's a bit of a hyperbolic declaration considering that there's a 4-7 review sample size depending on what site you're using. Even if the consensus ends up being about as negative as the reviews that have trickled out today, stuff like Space Jam: A New Legacy, Dear Evan Hansen or Thunder Force feel more in line with the Razzies typical criteria.

The current Metacritic score is a 27, making it the worst wide-released film this year. And seeing how it was directed by an Oscar winner and stars a recent Oscar nominee, Sony had to be expecting way more of a response. I don't see a Owen Gliberman or a Mick LaSalle or anyone from IGN or Film Threat bailing it out. Neither IndieWire nor The Playlist liked it and they'll rave about anything.

And I think they are returning to their old eligibility rules for the next one, which would make Thunder Force and any Netflix title ineligible (those an exception was made for the 2019 Razzie Redeemer winner).

Again, there's 4 reviews and 1 of them is a 15-which is precisely the only reason that it's that low. While things clearly appear to be trending in an underwhelming direction, there's just not enough information out there to make declarations that imply it's going to be one of the worst reviewed movies of the year at this point.

And also, I was never arguing that Sony wasn't expecting more of a response. They had Oscar hopes for it as recently as a few months back, so the fact that it's not only not getting awards attention but getting shrugged off by critics has to be disappointing to them.

The Golden Globes ceremony was exclusive to Twitter this year and as expected, it was a disaster few tuned in for.

West Side Story was the big winner and for some reason, the Foreign Press thought it was a comedy, leading a few to believe that the voting base didn't even watch the film before voting for it.
