Parasite is gonna win a lot tonight, although I wish there would be room for Portrait of a Lady on Fire, which was my favourite film of 2019. But those two are such great films.

Well, lets find out....

It is getting late and I am pretty tired, so on to the next featurette! Courtesy of numbersix:

Portrait Of A Lady On Fire

2019 was the year Celine Sciamma finally broke. She had spent the last 15 years becoming one of France’s best film-makers. She has written great scripts for others, such as the drama Being 17 and the oddball animation My Life as a Courgette, as well as the superb supernatural TV series Les Revenants. As a director she has made Tomboy and Girlhood, both powerful arthouse films. And now she created the beautiful, subtle love story Portrait of a Lady on Fire, a tale of an artist who can’t help but fall for her subject. Boasting incredible performances, this is a moving and restrained story of forbidden desire.

Picking up the pace, another Best Picture Featurette, courtesy of Buscemi.

Uncut Gems

Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler) is a man who seems to have it all. A thriving business, a loving family, a nice place in Long Island, and an uncut Ethopian opal that could possibly net him a seven figure deal. But under the surface, Howard is far from perfect, with a crippling gambling addiction, a failing marriage, and a large debt that could get him killed if he doesn’t pay it. When Kevin Garnett enters his business and discovers the power of the opal, it sets off one of the most cathartic and fast-paced thrillers in recent memory.

Josh & Benny Safdie, directors of 2017’s equally hyper-kinetic ride Good Time, top themselves with this one, which features one of Sandler’s best performances. Sandler, having previously been typecast in recent years for his Netflix comedies, takes charge as Howard, a man who will stop at nothing, even if it means losing everything, to win. The subject matter of addiction is handled with more care and made terrifying by the Safdies, done better than any studio could have done it. The feel of the film is much like some of the best films of Brian De Palma, taking you into this world of diamond merchants and beyond its urbane façade in the dark underworld of sports betting. Uncut Gems is a gem of gritty filmmaking.

Well if the Academy has enough taste to give major awards to such a great film as Parasite, surely we, who have a better taste than them, can only confirm that choice ;)

Just a couple of Best Picture nominee featurettes left, first up, courtesy of JohnErle.

The Lighthouse

With The Witch and now The Lighthouse, Robert Eggers has established himself as one of the leading directors of arthouse horror. With both films, Eggers has shown painstaking attention to period detail, writing dialogue and using dialects that can be a bit hard to understand at first, especially if you don't walk around with a copy of Moby Dick in your pocket. With The Lighthouse, he's added a black sense of humour, and he's taken the visuals to whole new level, shooting in stunning black and white with an impressionistic style and impressive low-budget FX. William Dafoe gives one of the best performances of his career, the sound design and score are remarkable, and considering how no one could shut up about the fish fucking in The Shape Of Water, I'm surprised there wasn't more chatter about Robert Pattinson giving the ol' Cedric Diggory-do to a sexy mermaid. Two words: Mermaid Vagina!

Ha ! Shoot, I was beginning to think that Song Kang-ho might get this one. I think I gave the least points to Phoenix out of the 4 I voted for.
He's great in it, but it's too much of a show off performance, and I didn't like the film.

If Parasite wins Best Picture, you have to show the French poster. You'll thank me.
