Why do the Oscars hate Greta Gerwig so?

I've got to get my Netflix on soon. Still behind on Irishman, Marriage Story, Two Popes. Also Pain and Glory, Judy, Lighthouse for the major awards.

Netflix also has two Animated films nominated. It's a huge year for them.

A24 got only one nom. I haven't seen Lighthouse, but you'd think it'd get more than one. Nothing for Farewell (they just went straight Golden Globe Drama noms and skipped over Awkwafina). Midsommar was so visually nuts I thought it deserved something, also best Pugh performance this year. No Uncut Gems. Waves was the best thing I've seen this year. Last Black Man in SF, High Life... They had such a great year.

No Taron Egerton. Both GG "Musical or Comedy" winners didn't make it.

Don't be surprised, W, Oscars have never been about awarding the most deserving films of the year.
Although I liked The Farewell but don't consider it one of the best of the year, and I hated The Lighthouse, so I can't say I'm bummed by their absence.
Parasite getting 6 noms is completely nuts, although we saw it coming those last few weeks.
I cn't explain myself those 11 noms for Joker, but I find it so highly overrated, so... Gerwig deserved the nom more than Philips for Best Director. I'm glad Banderas got in, he's terrific in Pain & Glory. Ad Astra would have deserved a Best VFX nom (well it deserved much more if you ask me, but that at least I thought was realistic).
What else ? Frozen II getting shut out of the ANimation race is surprising, although I won't cry for that.

Even though Joker got the most nominations, I'm going to say that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wins Best Picture. The Academy loves the showbiz movies (and it did win the Critics Choice award for Best Picture).

As for surprises, I'd say the biggest surprise is Dolemite is My Name getting shut out. Normally, I would have gone with A Hidden Life getting shut out but Disney made no attempt to promote that one (looks like Malick's getting a honorary Oscar in a few years).

How on earth did 1917 not get nominated for best editing? Is that real?

There are only about 27 edits in the entire film. Any film that's dependent on long takes should not be considered for Best Film Editing.

I don't know about that, it's Best Editing, not Most Editing.

The editing is very well done in 1917, it had to be in order to make it all seamless.

A lot of editing is good pacing. The first hour of 1917 drags due to the instance of the one-take style. It's a war movie, not Roma.

The Irishman was 90 minutes longer but feels much shorter. That's good editing.

This is the same organization that gave the award to Bohemian Rhapsody a year ago. Nothing they do in that category makes sense.

So BP either goes to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood or Bombshell comes out from the stands and hits Tarantino over the head with a folding chair?

6/9 is no laughing matter.

If anything beats Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, it might end up being Joker. Showbiz movie vs. showbiz movie and both have a lot of traction with the voters.
