Movie/TV Quotes of The Century

Post by numbersix »

Was thinking about this the other week.

There are lots of movie and TV quotes that are known by almost anyone, but they're mostly pre 2000. "We're gonna need a bigger boat", the misquoted "play it again Sam", "I'll be back", etc.

But as our way of living is more fractured I'm curious what we all think are the most recognised quotes from movies and TV since then.

"Hulk smash" and "You should have went for the head"
"Winter is coming"
"My precious"

What other ones am I missing?

Just off the top of my head:

"Puny god."
"I...am...Iron Man."
"I understood that reference."
"Nobody makes me bleed my own blood."
"Well, THAT escalated quickly."
"One does not simply WALK into Mordor."
"You shall not pass!!"
"Expecto patronum!"

Will try to think of more.

Those quotes really brought the room together.

Lebowski was '98, but that's the best I could come up with. I don't think anyone references Napoleon Dynamite any more, but it was quotable for a while.

The most widely recognizable and meme-worthy moment I could think of was actually a completely visual moment: ie, when Puss In Boots does that thing with his eyes in Shrek 2.

There was that period where people would not stop saying "I am Groot".

Speaking of The Dark Knight, you can't hear or see "We live in a society" nowadays without being reminded that The Joker said it.

"You either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain"
"You know nothing John Snow!"
"I'm in a glass case of emotion!"

Might be premature, but "I love you 3000" from Avengers: Endgame has been a phenomenon this year

Suprised no one has mentioned Mean Girls yet. Arguably the closest thing we have to a Rocky Horror-type phenomenon nowadays- only movie I can think of with a holiday created based on it.

"Stop trying to make fetch happen"
"On Wednesday we wear pink"

Etc.
It's not destroying. It's making something new.

HOW THE FUCK DID I FORGET THIS IS SPARTA???? My 15 year old self would be absolutely disgusted by the 300-ignoring monster I've become. To make up for that oversight, I'm throwing "Tonight We Dine in Hell!!!" into this conversation.

I think 300 became forgotten in the culturesphere after Frank Miller made himself persona non grata in the industry (but somehow Mark Millar is still as popular as ever despite being as much of an asshole as Miller is) and Zack Snyder developed such a detestable fanbase that's dead set on trying to fix an unfixable movie.
