Worst Remakes Tournament (Bracket Up/Play-Ins In Progress)

Post by Buscemi »

Seeing that the Worst Sequels Tournament was a big success, I have decided to create a new tournament for the worst remakes of all-time. And since remakes are a dime a dozen and often those remakes suck, I figured that this would be a prime opportunity to try and see which is the worst. I considered waiting until after the draft finished but it couldn't wait.

The plan: let's try to get to 96 this time instead of 65. And remakes of TV shows or specials WILL NOT count. Just remakes of movies.

My nominations:

Planet Of The Apes (2001 remake of the 1968 film Planet Of The Apes)
The Women (2008 remake of the 1939 film The Women)
King's Ransom (2005 remake of both the 1962 film High and Low and the 1996 film Ransom)
Swept Away (2002 remake of the 1975 film Swept Away)
Get Carter (2000 remake of the 1971 film Get Carter)
No Reservations (2007 remake of the 2001 film Mostly Martha)
Just Visiting (2001 remake of the 1993 film The Visitors)
The Grudge (2004 remake of the 2003 film Ju-On)
The Wicker Man (2006 remake of the 1973 film The Wicker Man)
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992 remake of the 1931 film Dracula)
Poseidon (2006 remake of the 1972 film The Poseidon Adventure)
The Day The Earth Stood Still (2008 remake of the 1951 film The Day The Earth Stood Still)
When A Stranger Calls (2006 remake of the 1979 film When A Stranger Calls)
Gone In 60 Seconds (2000 remake of the 1974 film Gone In 60 Seconds)
Guess Who? (2005 remake of the 1967 film Guess Who's Coming To Dinner)

Good idea. Will we ever have a "Best Sequels" or "Best Remakes" tournament?

I'll nominate:

The Wolfman (2010)
Clash of the Titans (2010)
A Christmas Carol (2009)
Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008)
Mirrors (2008)
Quarantine (2008)
Shutter (2008)
War of the Worlds (2005)

That's all I can think of right now.
Happy 60th birthday Jet Li! (4/26/23)

I'm going to go ahead and nominate/second any and all Tim Burton remake movies. Past, Present, and Future so
Alice
Sweeny Todd (you said tv shows and specials nothing about broadway which is pretty close to a movie)
Charlie
Planet of the Apes
His Batman movies should definitely count
and for future I'm sure his Addams Family remake will suck balls as well.

Sweeney Todd is an adaptation of the play.

His Batman movies weren't remakes.

yes, i agree with shryke, let's do some 'best of's (you really do like focusing on the negative huh)

and i cant think of any to nominate, as in i don't mind remakes at all. because i dont have no problem with them. I can understand when people gripe about sequels because they liked the first one and were hoping for something different in the continuation than what they got. but i will never get it when people gripe about remakes. First off the remake wont be the same as the original, if it would be, there would be no point to it. and if you dont like what they changed in the remake then go watch the original. it's still there, waiting to please you.

Actually, a remake is the same story as the original, and that's how many of us feel, that there is no point to it. It's few and far between that are superior to the original. And, most of the time, the only time there is a point is when a foreign title is remade, in which case the point is to help propagate American laziness, disregard for other cultures, and illiteracy (such as, in best hick voice, "I don't want to read at those damn movies" lol).

Also, and this is the worst part, it takes away from money that could be spent putting new stories on the screen, instead of putting out an inferior picture solely because it will sell as a brand to the huddled masses.

yes, they are 'the same story', but through a different eye. if that makes any sense. The new director and film team behind the movie have a different focus as to what they are trying to bring to the story. It's very rarely the same driving force behind it. I love seeing foreign movies, i dont mind reading them at all. but i also dont mind seeing american adaptions. I think it's interesting to see what different cultures bring to the end result, and that goes the same with different time periods and such.

Getting into the industry, yes i realize there are a lot of greedy people and it's all about the money for them (but that can be said about any industry in life) but there are also a lot of people 'perceived' in that way and yet they really just do love what they do. Would you spend millions of dollars on something that you might or might not get your money back, and be like oh 'hey well at least we were original, even though we lost a couple million'. (hey i'm sure there are a lot of original ideas out there, that would make a profit and people would love to see. it's just the not the right time for such risk taking though)

this isnt like you can make money playing the film on the streets or buy some charcoal and 'make' art. Making films cost money. if you lose money you wont be able to make any more films. its pretty simple
